Cows get culled for any diseases. Farmers lose hundreds sometimes thousands of head of cattle during outbreaks. Same with pigs and chickens. Niche animals should be treated the same way. I've got no issues with the Ostrich cull. Even if it was an ostrich sanctuary an avian flu outbreak would be devastating to the regional eco system. These folks should widen their lens and see the bigger picture.

i really like my purolator driver, i see him almost every day with pickups/deliveries - he's a good dude... but he really needs to stop with the conspiracy stuff.
why were the ostriches culled... becuz the farm had used them to figure out a cure for covid and this was big pharma making sure they were stopped... too much money to be lost by big pharma
ugggghhh

This is my view as well. I feel bad for the animals and the owners, but they shouldn't be treated any differently than cattle, pigs, chickens etc. it is for the protection and safety of all the animals. It isn't like they have a natural predator that can pick off the weak ones.
Do farmers have insurance for these sorts of things?
I do feel bad for farmers that have to deal with this sort of thing. The attitude and entitlement of these particular farmers removes a lot sympathy for me, but in general, it does suck to have that kind of misfortune.

I think I heard they’re getting $3k per bird from the government.
I think its a coping mechanism. Feeding yourself this narrative that you're on the front lines of the human resistance to the big pharma/government/black rock mind virus probably gives their otherwise mundane every day life more meaning. Also allows them to bond and form close relationships with other fantasy dwellers, and gain a sense of belonging and community.
That's how I make sense of it anyways, as someone who has family deep into that stuff.
What's insane is how they let their confirmation biases get so out of control that they begin to connect every story in the news back to one or two overarching conspiracies. Mental string and cork boards

According to court filings, in the event of a cull, the Health of Animals Act would limit compensation to $3,000 per bird — but the scheme is tied to compliance with CFIA directives that encourage "timely cooperation with the Agency's disease control measures."
so if the farm would have done things by the book and did their own cull when the outbreak happend they would have been compensated around $1M.... but they didn't, so i'd assume they get nothing.
