Petey to rangers for JT Miller. Both teams rebuilding. It’s 1 for 1!

With Vancouver in absolute tank mode right now, and the Flames being in rebuild/retool, it would be kind of fun if they become a rival again at the top of the division with us in a few seasons. Not that I want them to succeed but it would be the lesser of the no goods if it were them instead of the Oilers... It's more fun to banter with a rival fanbase that has at least a high school level of reading comprehension and a mouth with more than 4 teeth!

I think Vancouver fans would probably feel the same, I recall hearing a funny clip from a Canucks podcast a few years ago (I think Sekeres & Price?) where they were complaining about how insufferable Edmonton fans are and that they missed bickering with Flames fans.

We have and will always hate Edmonton more than Calgary. Was Donnie and Dhali around the same time that the Oiler on the HNIC panel threw a wobbler.

I know this is the V=NG thread so I'll try not to make this a Vancouver lovefest, but even as a Flames fan I often enjoy listening to Donnie & Dhali. Especially Don Taylor - loved his commentary in old EA NHL games and watching him on Sportsnet back in the day.

The Calgary vs Vancouver rebuild battle is on. Calgary has a head start as they started selling off 2 years ago when the Canucks were going for it. Calgary kind of paused selling assets off from June 24 until the Andersson trade and the Canucks shipped out Hughes and got a boatload in return.

The Canucks seemed resistant to the tear down but by all accounts are now fully on board listening to every player on their roster.

The Flames seemed resistant resistant to trade anyone with term left but rumors are floating around they are listening to vets with term and basically anyone on their roster.

Flames players under 25 on the NHL roster that includes Wolf, Bahl, Zary, Kuznetsov, Coronato, Brustewicz

Canucks players under 25 on the NHL roster include Rossi, Ohgren, Raty, Buium, Wallinder, E.Pettersson (D)

Both teams have 2x 1st this draft and the Canucks have an extra second. The Flames have an extra 1st next year and a 2nd or 1st in 2028. The Flames also have the Canucks 3rd this year from the Zadorov trade which is poised to be a high 3rd.

Vancouver has the current edge on their pick in the upcoming draft as they appear poised for a top 3 pick no matter what as they are the clear favorite for last place. Right now I think the Flames are in a better spot but that can change by the end of the draft depending on how this season, deadline and lottery go

^ List missing Gridin. Flames start includes the guys they've drafted and seem to be pretty sure NHlers but are not on the roster at the moment: Parekh, Reschny, Honzek. And maybe Potter, Mews and Wyttenbach.

Fair with Gridin who is now on the team. I am not listing mid 1st rounders or prospects not in the NHL. Canucks love Coates as much as the Flames love Reschny.

Mews and Wyttenbsch are very exciting but I have no notion of the Canucks prospects outside their top 3 so it is tough to list flames guys we track. This board used to be hyped about Max Reinhart, Ryan Howse, Emile Poirier but none of those guys panned out.

I personally think it is very interesting embarking down a similar path as one of our biggest rivals to see how each team goes about it and who will be more successful in the short and long term

Unfortunately both teams being Canadian market points to likely failure for both organizations. The moment one or both organizations get a sniff of success, shortcuts will be taken. This is the way.

If Honzek isn't an NHLer, he's pretty close to being one. Would likely still be in the lineup without his injury.

From the Athletic's Red Light Newsletter:
Quote:
Of all the players who appear on the Canucks’ cap sheet this year, the leading scorer is#Oliver Ekman-Larsson.

No, he doesn’t play for Vancouver. No, he hasn’t played for them in three years. Yes, he’s switched teams twice since then.

But when the Canucks bought him out in 2023, they incurred a cap charge that will last until 2031. This year, that cap hit is $4.76 million, making Ekman-Larsson their third-highest-paid blueliner. And he’s apparently been worth every penny, I guess, racking up 31 points heading into last night’s action,#two points more than the Canucks’ leading scorer, Elias Pettersson.

Maybe the Canucks should let their accountants run the team. They're better at paying good players than playing them!

They're the Canucks, they can never win the lottery.

Can you tell that to those CPers who are already writing Stenberg's name on the Canucks' roster in ink?

Hoping Canucks braintrust will leave the Flames the better player again if they pick before the Flames circa 2016 when they took Juolevi instead of Tkachuk.
