True I sort of exaggerated I didn't mean expiring right away, but only short term left to deal him and we all know what gets you a 1st+ today could be a 3rd round pick next TDL. It's basically the Flames mantra to sell in the worst trade markets possible.
Anyways, much crazier deadline than it's been recently. Cool to see some teams really load up.

It's how the Stars became as good as they are. But they also were missing the star center and loaded up to trade for Rantanen. They can beat anyone this year, but things change next summer. Johnston, Rantanen and Oettinger are all making a ton more next year. If Seguin comes back, they don't have much room to keep guys like Duchene, Granlund, Benn. The following year they have Harley and Roberston to sign. This is the issue with the Dallas Stars model and why drafting an elite center make life easier.
Colorado just loads up every year and can do it year after year because they have MacKinnon and Makar.
Flames need to draft Dallas good a few times to be as good as they are, they also attract players and we don't.

I see Zayne Parekh is already getting the "Jarmoe Iglinia" treatment. The name isn't that exotic, Southern Albertans.

Sounds like it was a sellers market this year, so I’m a little disappointed Cgy didn’t take advantage. This team is awful but propped up by elite goaltending.
I can see trying to build a competitve culture I suppose. The longer they are in the hunt for the playoffs the more drive the vets will have.
But none of Kadri, Huberdeau, Andersson, or Coleman will be contributing when this team is good again. Feels like 3 of those guys could have earned us above average returns.

They could still move any of those guys at the draft or at a future deadline though. That's why I'm not panicking yet.

If you break that down:
Andersson: Yes. Could have been dealt. I think Conroy had a price and that price wasn't met.
Huberdeau: Contract i not moveable even with a better season. Not with that term and $$$
Kadri: Full trade protection. Doesn't want to go. Has settled down here
Coleman: Has a 10 team no trade list. Could be traded. Don't think the team wants to trade him.
So really its Andersson and Coleman. I think the math on both they will have other opportunities to trade them, so unless a high price was met, no point to it. I don't think they would have even tried with Coleman though. I think he's an excellent trade chip in his final year

You've heard over and over how well the Flames treat players and their families. It's something the organization has done for a long time, but renewed focus on it during this rebuild, so when the new building opens, they will be well positioned to attract players for a number of reasons.
|
I think this has to be looked at as a pretty important silver lining. Since July 2022, the Flames and Calgary went through a rough ride of players wanting to move on. Turning that reputation around is really important for long term sustainable success. The fact no players vocally wanted out and the Flames weren't in the news cycle 24/7 for that reason, should be looked at as a positive.
Reputation counts for a lot and keeping players that want to stay plants the seeds for attracting players in the future.

Huberdeau is retiring a Flame - there’s no moving a buyout proof deal thats almost entirely signing bonuses that have yet to be paid.
Nobody traded for anyone with 4 years/$28M remaining yesterday - it will be much easier to make that trade in the summer.
Unless a shark bites his leg off, Andersson is going to have astronomically high value whenever it comes time to do a deal. Whether that’s the draft, mid-season or TDL 2026 - I would expect something resembling the Lindholm trade as a return.
Coleman has two years left after this. They’ll move him when they move him.
If they sold them now, they’d destroy so much of what they’ve built, and what this franchise and fanbase don’t need is another gut punch.

Glad we didn't pay for boat anchor Cozens. I would've done maybe Cozens and a 1st for a 7th I guess. The Buffalo 1st would fetch something nice.

I heard Flames were offered a 3rd rounder for Hanley but it wasn’t for this year’s draft. Should have taken that imo, but I can see why they didn’t, considering they wanna make playoffs. Hanley has been quite effective
