It's not a surprise that the NHL is trying to make money. That's quite literally their entire goal of existing.

I think this showcase will also really help get new eyes on the product which is great for the NHL, the fans, and the players.

Nothing wrong with making money but I think what fans and players want is consistency. Sounds like the NHL has learned a lesson here and is going with a regular scheduled tournament too.

I think it's tough because you will have injuries in non team related events too which will enrage some fans as well. It also shows you how blah the regular season product really is while charging a fortune for it it.

The NBA launched an in season tournament in 2024 as well. It's become kinda comical where 8 weeks into an NBA season you have some NBA team holding up some trophy that didn't exist and is somewhat meaningless.

I guess this how the rich get richer as well.

While launching this tournament on the first day, they literally remade the tournament and rebranded it again to World Cup of Hockey and expanded it to many more countries. Imagine FIFA starting out the Euro Cup, excluding the most recent European winners and then on day #1 launching another tournament name from 12 years prior and including non European countries?

There is nothing wrong with having full international tournament including the best NHL players but it has to be global.

Everything is made up for money nowadays.

Olympics keep making stuff up for more money too. FIFA is constantly making stuff up for more money ie. the expanded FIFA Club World Cup this summer.

And this tournament was never really a re-brand or part of the World Cup of Hockey branding because NHL knew it wasn't.

It was a quickly thrown together tournament to test an in-season best on best because the NHLPA had been asking for that.

They also knew they could only have rosters that could be 100% made up of NHL teams and these 4 nations and Russia were the only 5 that could pull it off, and Russia was banned.

And in the end the winner of this tournament won't be looked at prestigiously as winning an Olympic gold, Canada Cup, or World Cup...but man the players seem to care and it's been a lot of fun and for me personally it hasn't cost me any extra money.

So why do I care if it's a so called money grab.

thing is they don't even get paid more to win, fight, hit, ect. If they were mailing it in he may have a point

They are getting paid but it’s a lot less obviously and these tournaments usually pay out a bonus to the winning team

Tonight's game will be the interesting one.

US have already secured their spot in the finals, Sweden has nothing to play for.

Do we get an actual game...or is it a glorified all-star game level of intensity?

NHL always has meaningless games at the end of the season...it will be something like that IMO. SWE won't want to give up easy IMO

They should have had bonus money for 1st through 3rd, then had a game Wednesday between Finland and Sweden. This way Sweden would be playing for home ice tonight.

If we're being honest, there should really be a 2v3 semifinal round in a tournament like this. If Sweden had beat Finland in regulation, it would have given the US the ability to punt Canada from the tournament by throwing their game tonight. A team's fate should never be determined by something like that.

But hey, with Canada in the finals now, I'm not complaining. But in future tournaments there really should be a semifinal round.

They didn’t want this to go too long with too many games. It was thrown together quickly to get something.

If they do the World Cup in 28 the finals and semi finals should be held in Calgary.

The players didn’t want it. Also it’s replacing all star weekend which shuts down the league for 6 days. This is going to be 13 days.

The World Cup being played in European cities doesn’t seem feasible as well.

Doing it in season it pretty much will have to be in North America.

In all honesty the game on Thursday is as equally ridiculous.
