It is good to see that Kuznetsov and Stromgren are making strides this year. I remember they were both drafted a bit off the board, but looked at the time to be really intriguing boom/bust sort of picks. It would be amazing if they both boomed, and they appear finally to be trending in that direction.

Really liking Morin’s composure defensively.
More composed than guys like andersson and kylington were at the same age. Great pick.

Stromgren, Kerins, and Honzek were the standouts to me. I can see why they liked Stromgren in his draft year. Very slick.

What cold water?
This is the problem too often with this site, if you don't immediately overrate every Flames player it gets labelled as negative, troll etc.
Getzlaf was one of the most talented players from the best draft in NHL history. To say that he has more talent than a guy drafted 16th a couple weeks ago isn't throwing cold water on anything. It isn't even a criticism of Honzek.
There should be room to be honest about players/prospects without having it only be over the top homerism.

CapFriendly has Stromgren listed with a European Assignment Clause for this coming season. I would *guess* it may be related to the ECHL, but I haven't heard anything definitive on that.
|
Thanks for clearing that up. I think I misread something about because he was drafted slightly older and thereby having his ELC "carry over."
Stromgren's Swedish League team was relegated to second tier AllSvenskan, so unless the Flames and Brynas make arrangements, it's probably wiser to keep him with the Wranglers (happily, he's making a strong case for himself).

If you can't tell the difference between politely suggesting we shouldn't get ahead of ourselves and saying something like "He doesn't have Getzlaf skill or anything close to it." then I honestly don't know what to say.

Getzlaf's elite skill was so overwhelmingly obvious in his draft year that he went, uh, 19th

I think depending on how old you are when you sign the ELC, the length of the contract changes. 22-23 year olds sign 2 year ELCs. This may be what you were thinking of.

Moderately interesting observations:
1. Chatted briefly with Conroy about Honzek after I mentioned I saw him hit the light. Conroy said he has a heck of a shot, and "We'd like to see him get it off a little faster" which made me laugh, but he was dead serious.
2. Klapka looked great in the moments I watched him. Big, good positioning and plays, solid all around.
3. Kerins had a good day; strong effort all around and where he needed to be on plays.
4. I really like Kuznetsov. I'm an armchair average fan, but the guy doesn't look far away from being ready to my uninformed eyes.
Other players I thought looked great were Stromgren, Boltmann (positionally sound). Coronato is tenacious and you can tell he's given'r out there. Honzek is as advertised: huge, smooth skating.
Ciona was spending a fair amount of time with Danielle on his skating; before the scrimmages it was Honzek, Ciona, Kuznetsov, Morin, Nikolaev, Lipinski, and a couple others spending time on ice with her.

Don't let the facts get in the way of a comfortable narrative.....
A bit off topic, but as someone who checks in on this site a few times a week, I appreciate your insights, and over the years I sense an evolution from someone whose bent is generally laced with emotion (a fan) to someone who values objectivity over bias or personal opinion. I think this bodes well for your professional future. Good work.

Are you thinking of players drafted that turn 19 before Jan1? In those cases I believe if the team signs the player before the end of the year, they could potentially slide the contract for 2 years.
It would be 1 year if signed after Dec 31 I think.
I remember the Flames did this with Emile Poirier who also had a late birthday.
