It seems to me from the presser that Nonis is the main contract guy and will be taking a big role in that area for the Flames.

The impressive remarks from Conroy as follows. The team seems to be in capable hands:

- Alluding they won't be plugging up the roster with signings leaving no room for youth to make the team. More youth is needed in the lineup.
- Can't go into next year with 7 UFAs from both a team and asset management standpoint.
- Wants players that want to be here and not just cashing cheques.
- Team needs to play with a great deal of freedom and tempo offensively.

Zadorov is the other piece that's probably not back.

If Gaudreau signs for $10.5M, and then you still have the pending Tkachuk decison then no way Zadorov get's re-signed.

Kadri: $7M
Zadorov: $3.75M
Rooney: $1.1M

I doubt any of those contracts are signed in the situation where Gaudreau comes back.

Tkachuk may also not leave if Gaudreau stays, and on it goes

Any of the three that would offer long term value in exchange.

I agree hind sight is 20/20 but that’s precisely the point. It was clear him leaving was a fairly large risk even at that time. To believe otherwise is to forgive an epic failure in asset management and one even Conroy himself today admits. Not really all that debatable to be honest.

Sometimes as a GM you have to make a tough call for the long term benefit of the team. When you exclusively make short term calls the way Treliving did you will not eventually win. Prioritizing long term organizational health / needs is required to win a cup IMO.

I think you get most of the value of Burke's hockey mind while minimizing the negative side.

Burke's negative is that he can be like Sutter.

They can both be an A-hole or they can be wrong, but they can not be both.

When they are wrong, their stubbornness frequently only makes matters worse.

Nonis usually avoids this while working in the background. He also traded Todd Bertuzzi for Luongo.

Maloney said it best, his contract work, complete knowledge of the CBA. Between him and Maloney they will fill the gaps where Conroy has weaknesses.

Did Nonis even say anything at the press conference? I haven’t had a chance to watch it.

Nonis is underrated as an exec. Yeah, he wasn't a great GM. But that doesn't cancel out the rest of his career. Just like Maloney was a good add at the time (even though most here disagreed) I feel Nonis is a good addition as well. Happy to have him

He was asked several questions directly, including about his experiences working as a GM in a Canadian market and what that means for attracting players.

Maybe we don't have to endure anymore Richardson, Rooney, Rinaldo esque last minute PTOs and signings anymore! That alone is worth the promotion.

Something interesting that Craig said was that Brad worked alone a lot and he wants to be more collaborative. This may be one of the downfalls of Brad especially the coaching decisions he made.

It's both really. You are correct in that Kadri's effort is completely on him, but his effort/attitude was fueled by the coaching issue.

There's an adage that life is 10% what happens to you and 90% how you react to that. So live your life at 90% and you'll find success but live your life at 10% and you'll be miserable and spin your wheels trying to find success. Kadri lived life at 10% last season. He didn't react well to the dark clouds hovering over the Flames.

I think they mentioned him having specialty in Cap management and CBA stuff. Sounds like it could be a good fit.

If Gaudreau stays and Tkachuk still wants out then they probably don't go with the Florida package.

Kadri is paid $7MM USD to play hockey. Expecting him to work hard more often than not is not quite like that adage, which is better suited to something like a person who has their parents killed or grows up in poverty.

Like, give me a break. It’s okay to call a spade a spade. We don’t need to invent up reasons to defend the really indefensible.

It's hard to say with Zadorov. He did mention recently that he prefers the U.S., mainly due to weather and the fact that he has lived there more. I can't blame him, especially about the weather thing. But he also said that Calgary is a nice city to play in and I think he really appreciates that he developed into an important player and fan favourite here. I get the sense that he is a professional above all else and will do what he thinks is best for is career. He did after all, go to free agency last year then circled back to Calgary when I am sure if he really wanted to, could have gone elsewhere. I would be shocked if there weren't other offers out there for him.

And if those three teams are Edmonton, an over the cap Tampa Bay and Philly, who had zero interest? Or if he just lists three teams that would never make an offer because he wants to be a UFA?
