LOL, wild text to go with that.

How about we put an end to this nonsense immediately, and force City Hall to reverse course and bring back fireworks now, this year?
Ya, that probably isn't going to happen.

I would assume it's whatever department is in charge of coordinating the city's Canada Day celebrations.

Why would you expect Council to be doing that work?

I think it was the Arts and Culture committee.

Was not aware that council is not responsible for what happens within the city and for what reasons when it comes to national holidays.

So Penners reasoning is from them? Gondek? Just her own?

This ... isn't racist.

At worst, it shows you have an inferior palate.

People are so afraid of being labeled a racist over a pedo that rubecube can't even provide a good example of racism.

That was my example of what people might think is racist and apologize in advance.

I don't like Indian food at all, but that's my loss.

Yeah, can we all just agree that fireworks are cool and this is a stupid justification for not having them? Also that Councilor Penner should have considered her justification now back when she won Ward 11 and instead conceded to the runner-up... you know, lest she discredit the voices who asked for a different councilor.

I'm Chinese, and I'd say none of the weird workplace interactions happen around me either. When it's Chinese New Year, folks of all colour have no issues coming to me and wishing me a Happy Chinese New Year. I've never once felt folks were uncomfortable culturally appropriating anything. I joke all the time with my colleagues about taking them to dim sum and getting them finally try chicken feet. They don't apologize to me when they tell me they find it gross.

This fireworks thing, all my Asian friends and family were surprised they aren't doing it this year. We all love fireworks, heck I think Asians love it even more TBH.

I love fireworks but if we could get one of those sweet drone shows I think that'd be cool too. This just seems lame.

The problem with fireworks is that they are a waste of gunpowder. Blow up some real sh*t for a change -- perhaps disco records.

I'm not a big fireworks guy but I understand that people like them and it's been a longstanding Canada Day tradition so it seems strange that nobody is owning up to this decision as clearly this wasn't something done on a whim. If people want to make big decisions like this that alter a day of celebration for Canadians, then they should at least come out and explain their rationale.

Well, now you’ve crossed the line, son. Take that back!

Sure, but deflecting that "these people who we directly oversee made this decision, it wasn't us" once a decision proves unpopular is pretty weak. Either it's a bad decision, in which case council could absolutely overturn it, or it's a good decision, in which case you should own it.

I propose a drone show with rockets trying to shoot down the drones and explodamafying everywhere like fireworks, but completely, totally entirely different. Don't take fun away, always add more fun.

Ultimately, for the amount of opportunities to see fireworks in Calgary, I am fine with this.

I don't really care for fireworks. I would like to see what a lightshow would have in store; or a drone show would be sweet!

The reasoning for not having fireworks is certainly a miss. But I dont think im going to go all Evelyn Beatrice Hall on this one.

To both sides of this argument, it is clearly not about the fireworks. When William Huntington crafted "Clash of Civilizations", I don't think he thought it would be internal clashes
