Defending Makar and Mackinnon was a nice warmup for next game. Hanifin had some real solid D against Mackinnon. The two non-breakaway goals against reminded me of the net crashing that the Oilers were doing in the POs, so that's something for Sutter to work on.

Yeah our forwards seem to release on their coverage when the player activates down low and won’t follow them to the net.
But if the dmen are already in coverage then the forward needs to collapse with that forward or else you’re outnumbered down low.

Outshooting the champs 18-4 by mid-game was pretty damn impressive, must say. This team doesn't appear to have lost a beat possession wise.

haha . ditto me, same age, same scenario
we had done a few things to put ourselves in a bit of trouble (like taking down a 66 CFR Go Flames Go billboard from an overpass and carrying it around along with our open liquor) but we were well treated overall- my recollection was a general happy vibe

Really solid effort from the boys, I thought they played with a lot of pace.
Number 1 takeaway for me was how well the defense played, as a group - they were boxing out everyone, getting sticks in lanes, moving the puck up ice - they were every bit as good as they have been billed all summer.
I thought Andersson had a great game. Big Z, as well. Going to really like having Weegar here - he is everything Hamonic was supposed to be.
I thought Lucic and Dube had really good games. Kadri looks great. The Mangiapane-Kadri-Dube line might be as good as the first line. Thought Toffoli played well.
The biggest concern coming in to the season, IMO, was chemistry and would they get off to a slow start. I think with 9 of their first 10 at home, and no nights on the road until Nov 6th, they are going to get off to a great start.
Very excited for this team - they could be really good.

Last night, Backlund surpassed Robyn Regehr's 826 games played with the Flames and now sits alone in 3rd for all-time games played with the franchise.
https://twitter.com/user/status/1580968867782094848
He is 122 games behind Gio for 2nd, and 392 games behind Iggy for 1st.
In the 5 decade history of the franchise since Atlanta, only 38 players have even played 392 games for the Flames. Only 29 have played that many in Calgary.

A good first game, they came out ready to play. The Avs started to push when it got to 5-1 which is to be expected.
It was a brand-new team, integrating new players is one thing but when they are top line players it takes time to gel.

Flames missed a few chances early. Could have been 3 or 4 in the first.

Their PP capitalized last night but to me, the setup still has quite a bit of work yet. It felt like they were possessing but not getting the 'A' looks that a premiere pp should get. Is Huberdeau in his most ideal spot? If he stays on the left flank, does he need a LHD to feed one-timers?
They need to gear it around Huberdeau, IMO, and felt to me like it was very much still sorting itself and not featuring him as much as it should.
Huge potential with his vision that I'm sure the Flames coaching staff are salivating over.

I thought the Avs pushed at 2-1, and the 3-1 goal was a back breaker. Rantaanen missing that open net might have been the game.

The Kadri line was outstanding. Hoping to see more from Backlund and Coleman against Edmonton but I thought they were really dragged down by Lewis in transition. As it is, that line doesn't really have a natural distributor.
I still can't get over that pass Huberdeau made to set up Lindholm.
|
Sure, but every line was underwater against the MacKinnon line in the 3rd - that was just score-effect, IMO.
I thought the 4th line had a great game. In the first 2 periods, they had multiple shifts against the MacKinnon line, and kept the play up-ice pretty much every time. Watching Looch outrace Makar was glorious. I thought Rooney had a very effective game.

I thought Rooney played well for the first 2 periods but struggled (like most of that line) in the 3rd. Understandable since the Avs were pushing hard. I wonder if Sutter will give Ruzicka a game against the oilers. Don’t think he wants Ruzicka sitting in the press box for long periods.
