That sad scene never fails to bring a little mist to my eyes. Great television.

Florida got a 24 year old Tkachuk on an 8-year deal. Thats where the value came in.
Calgary were the only ones who could offer him 8 years so we signed him and then we traded him to Florida.
|
I'm genuinely confused by this. Why could Calgary extend Huberdeau and Weegar to 8 year deals following the trade yet Florida would not have been able to do that with Tkachuk?

I have my tickets to the Panthers Flames game Nov 19. I’ll let you all know how that scene goes down.

Someone can correct me if I am wrong, but I think it has to do with the fact that Hubs and Weegar were already signed through next year's trade deadline, so it is an extension as opposed to a new contract. Tkachuk was an unsigned player, so either the previous team can give him an extension for 8 years, or the new team can sign him to a new contract.

Both contracts don't start until next year. I think the player has to be on your roster before the trade deadline for an eight year deal

Their current contracts are not expired until next summer, these are extensions, Tkachuk was a RFA.

To get him as part of the deal was complete larceny. I'm sure glad he did but Zito really messed up adding him in the deal. Not even mentioning his hockey skills he seems like a good guy and quality veteran.Which was lacking around these parts.

Agree 100%.
It's also interesting at the end of the clip -- he talked more about wanting to play in the NHL for as long as he can which is why he was happy to sign a 8-year deal (versus specifically signing in Calgary, although it obviously needed to be a fit). Reinforces the notion that for guys like Huberdeau and Weegar, they are hockey players first and foremost and are willing to play on a competitive team that wants them and in a city that they're comfortable with.

Is it just me, or does Weegar kind of look like Colin Hanks?

Zito got Mackenzie Weegar mixed up with their prospect Mack Guzda. Probably.

Next summer only $1 mil but after that we should be seeing huge increases. Projections are $4 mil a year for 2 years and who knows after that but this contract is a steal in today's cap

To those saying it's too long, or the last few years will be painful, let me remind you about Giordano.
Gio signed for 6years at $6.75M, covering his 33-38YO seasons. Many said the last half of the deal would be awful. He won the Norris in year 4 at 36 and in year 5 the deal was still reasonable.
And then there was Tanev. Many said the 2nd half of his contract would be painful, and Nuck fans laughed at us. Tanev has been worth at least $7M these last two years, and is there anyone here who would not sign him to a 2X $4.5M deal for the next two years, in a heart beat?
This contract covers Weegar's 29/30 year, through his 36/37 year. IMO, it will be a bargain for the first 3, no worse than reasonable for the second 3, and then we'll see what the last 2 look like. By then however, the cap will be north of $100M and $6.25M will be the equivalent of $4-4.5M now. So who cares?

Florida trading for Tkachuk is kind of like... I would like that $100 bill (Tkachuk) from you. In exchange, I would like to trade you these $90 dollars (Huberdeau), a $50 dollar bill (Weegar), a $20 (1st round pick) and a $5 dollar bill (Schwindt). Let me know if interested.
|
Except, I'd see Huberdeau as being $100, as well. He's the better player but Tkachuk has the benefit of being younger so I see them as being equal.
