Real talk tho. I wonder how much this off-season changes how GMs operate. Tree introduced the league to the first ever sign and trade, and had his two best superstars leave while still coming out on top.
Have to think other GMs now look at all this the next time they’re in a similar situation with a UFA and/or RFA superstar who’s taking their time making a decision (or just flat out says they’re not signing).
Treliving showed how sometime taking on risk and how to exploit GM's who over value team control and age can help build a team real quick.
Next off-season the Flames have all of their top 9 forwards plus 1 signed, all of their top 6 dmen signed plus 1 and their #1 goalie signed and have around $3.5 mil cap space next year. Not bad with all the new deals kicking in.
League min is $775k next year and he had Gilbert and Ruzicka with a cap hit at $762k. Not a big deal but this shows he always thinking of ways to manage his cap.
The Quest stands upon the edge of a knife. Stray but a little, and it will fail, to the ruin of all. Yet hope remains while the Company is true. Go Flames Go!

That contract structure is excellent, nice to see some sanity again. As much as we all hate buyouts at least it is an option here (as well as Kadri) if things go bad in the later years of the contract.
This trade was the biggest blockbuster of the cap era. 3 players all signing max term deals $50M, $76M, $84M deals. The Flames use the draft pick acquired in the deal to free up the space to sign the second best free agent available after losing the top free agent. Still such a shocking summer. Really glad to have this new core locked up
On top of that the cap is expected to go up in the next few seasons, which will make those deals look even better as they'll be even less of a total percentage of the total cap.

It's funny how we see this as a juicy contract in the Flames' favor, but I think it's a really fair deal.
From Weegar's point of view, he came from being a 7th rounder, late bloomer, averaging 55 games per season for 4 years until last year's 80 games where he had a huge season.
He's turned that into a $50mm contract with trade protection and stability that pays him until he's 37.
Congrats to him. You can see why he is gushing. So glad to have this stud on our blueline for years.

He seems like a really humble, down-to-earth guy. Happy for him, and so happy that he chose Calgary. Not only has the maturity level of the locker room changed, but character level too. Great day!

By next summer we should hopefully finally see the cap start to increase again, no?

Imagine how good the team would be if they can add a Tarasenko, Pastrnak, Larkin, etc..
