You are correct about Crouse, but Arizona grabbed him, and he still is bad.

Strome is a Strome and won't pan out.

Merkley is a non factor compared to other first rounders that year precisely because he hasn't made the NHL, whereas others have.

No, he's not. As has been mentioned, OEL is a train wreck in his own zone. He has quite the reputation, but he can't back it up when it comes to playing in his own zone. Arizona fans love him in the offensive zone, but think he's Dennis Wideman bad in the defensive zone. Having watched him a lot, I would be hesitant to trade for him unless you had a Robyn Regher type stay at home to play for him and cover his mistakes. OEL makes TJ Brodie look like stay at home defenseman.

Lots of guys drafted before and after Merkley haven't made it yet. Still time particularly for a kid who has had injury problems.
He's made the jump from the Dub to the AHL with zero problems. That's a good sign.

He is an incredible -58 over his last 121 games. You would think he plays for the 1993 Ottawa Senators. Easily the worst on his team, not sure what it means as he is so hyped. You would think a supposed top Dman would be a rock even on a bad team but it doesn't seem that way in this case.

LOL no he's not. He's one of those defenseman that is at times the worst player on the ice. Just awful at times in his own end. I'm willing to bet if you surveyed GM's in the league more than 3/4 would prefer Hamilton. There's a reason when Treliving picks up the phone most of the time its regarding the availability of Hamilton. He's the most coveted player on the Flames roster.

I think it was rumored a couple of years ago I believe that Hamilton was on the trading block (when he really wasn't), and a bunch of GMs came calling Treliving asking about Hamilton... I could be wrong, but I do remember something along the lines of that.

A pending free agent, who has a decent agent who has ties with the Dregers and Mackenzie’s etc, can get the momentum going for their client in the media with a few text messages.

Scott Hannan was the classic case of this years back, an average defenseman with debatable potential, and he got hyped for months until free agency as a guy that so many team should require, and Colorado then paid severely for him that summer 4 y $18m, and that was in 10 years ago $.
Hannan scored 5 goals and was -24 in less than 4 y before the Avalanche traded him.

OEL became a topic really only when, surprise surprise, the Coyotes travelled through Toronto and an eastern swing, and the media shills had a chance to throw his name out there as a “top” free agent that is undervalued and can be pried away from Phx.
