Jagr is a completely different beast. One of the truly all time greats and is built like an absolute tank.
Theo wasn't snubbed. He wasn't good enough.
If he had been good enough, he would have earned a spot.

Fun stats for those 14 games: 1 goal (we all know that one), 3 assists and 29 PM!
Remember how ancient Lanny seemed that year? He was 35, 4 years younger than Iggy.
|
In an era when conditioning and the science of fitness was an afterthought. I think the Lanny comparison is actually a good one.
How important was a guy like Lanny in the Flames 89 run? Obviously everyone remembers the goal but as you pointed out the overall performance wasn't exactly huge. They may have won without him as well but sometimes even the smallest contributions are the ones that get you to the top of the mountain.
The question is could Iginla provide that type of value to a young team. I would take a chance on it. Its not like the team is an outright contender anyways and it would pretty much be a rental. It would be a low risk move. Worst case scenario Iginla retires a Flame and everyone moves on.

I've watched a couple Avs games this year and as the camera moved back and forth to follow the puck, Iggy would keep dropping out of the picture because both his skating and anticipation were too slow to keep up with the play. that's a huge red flag if you want to try and slot him into the fast, efficient transition that we're developing here.
he's like that one deformed guy in 300 who wanted to join the Spartans...nice spear thrust, but can't hold his shield up properly, and so would totally ruin their phalanx formation.

Basically, you only add Iggy if you need a right shot for the pp. He can and will score on the pp. He knows where to go, he's strong enough to battle and he still has the shot.

I don't really worry about Iginla being a 'bad locker room presence'. Come on, he has been on 3 other teams, and in each case, you hear nothing but good things from his teammates. There was never a single legitimate tidbit of Iginla being 'bad' in his time here, and to me, it sounded a heck of a lot more like spin from people that wanted him gone.

Less about being bad in the room, and more about if he is buying into the overall approach and system.
I think if you got an honest answer from guys like Regehr and Warrener that would confirm where there are some valid concerns.

I have to fully agree. It's baseless and slander to sugget something not only does all evidence point against, but has absolutely no evidence supporting it. It's like the McCarthy lady saying vaccines are causing autism.
But I would speculate Iginla and Brent Sutter didn't like each other, and that may have tainted things between Iginla and the organization, since Brent had several brothers in the organization. But Iginla was the guy to score goals on a team that couldn't buy one, so it must have been hard to tell a team defense wins games when they were losing and Iginla cheated the system to try and win a game for the club - and sometimes it worked. If Brent would have had any other goalie, he wouldn't have lasted 3 years

I haven't watch any Colorado games yet this season (maybe I'll try to now) but I am fully on board with bringing Iggi back to set up shop on the PP, provide some grit and to help in the locker room. Plus the added depth going into the playoffs always helps, you know someone is going to get hurt at some point and our forward depth isn't amazing.
There is zero risk that Flames management overpays to get him here, so I'm not sure why that's even being discussed. No worries there.
And always have to love the people questioning Iggi's attitude. Ha!

I'm not sure that anyone is saying that he'd be a bad locker room presence, but that he'd be a distraction. This was his team for so long, that for him to come back, I could see there being a potential distraction. Even if the players and Iginla were totally cool with it, can you imagine the questions/comments they'd all face from the media on a daily basis?

The last place Iggy will go is to Montreal. They basically ran Subban out of there even after what he had provided for the city. I can't see any colored player other than a francophone playing there. If Carey Price was as good as he is, they'd probably run him out too.
I'd say bring back Iggy to add size if the Flames are pushing for a playoff run. The last playoff run everyone saw how bad it was against a big team like the Ducks. There's no way Iggy's gonna let opposition players run ANY players on his team.

they certainly tried to run Carey Price out of town too. Many years back, before he became an elite super goalie, he was just an average starter for a bit. He was part of a tandem with Halak. There was a period of time where he was playing badly and getting booed by the hometown team.

is his NMC full? Or just partial teams?
If it is a full NMC I can see him coming back here as he controls his own fate. The price will be set by the number of teams he agrees to go to, and I have to think if the Flames are fighting for first in their division he will look at Calgary as a great choice for a multitude of reasons. If the price is cheap enough it will be hard for Treliving to say no.

I don't know about that. I thought Subban was very popular with the fans, but not with his team-mates.

Put me in the No Thanks column as well. This team has moved on, I think a lot of people need to do the same. Remember the good times and don't ruin them by bringing him back and him under performing and becoming the whipping boy for discontent.

Hells no. Sentiment is great for fans but he doesn't fill any need on this team right now. Love Iggy but wasn't him leaving the first step of ending the country club coach killing core that get us into this rebuild?
