It's not like they're paying for swimming, anyway. Their parents do. And as a parent, if my kid got a free swimming coupon I'd be annoyed. Now they want me to take them swimming and we're super busy as is and I don't really want to flap around in some nasty cesspool anyway.

Swimming coupons are great. My kids hit up a house that they know has given out swimming coupons in the past and they were disappointed they weren't giving them out this year.
Sure, it's not as though kids have to pay for swimming anyway. But a coupon means a guaranteed trip to the pool, and our kids love swimming.

People are giving you free candy/chips. Don't make it awkward for them.

Nah, I didn't miss a year right up until and including October of grade 12. Once you're past high school forget it, but I'll never give a kid grief for going out and having fun like that.

I always thought the generally accepted rule of trick or treating was you retire at about 13 or 14.
I suppose 15 and 16 isn't too egregious.

The last year I trick or treated was Grade 11. I always looks three years younger than my friends so people usually thought they were taking their younger sibling out. It was sweet.
I had a group of 8 kids last night that said Merry Christmas instead of Happy Halloween. Weirdos.

All of the teenagers at my door said Merry Christmas, Happy Hanukkah or Happy Birthday. I don't get it.

That's what I would do if I was still going door to door panhandling for candy.

We are located about 1 block from the lake. I know someone who backs onto the lake and they were even busier. Kids know where to target.

Red pocket money or bust.
We're in Mount Pleasant. About 25 kids showed up, which is about the same as last year.

0, but I'm in a condo in Edmonton. Still, you'd think that Edmonton parents would do a better job of teaching their kids how to beg at an early age

It was our son's first birthday yesterday, so we both took the day off and brought him to Market Mall because we could put him in the stroller if he got tired. I was pretty shocked at how busy the mall was at noon, considering it was a weekday.
A lot of stores didn't participate or "ran out of candy" at noon. Lame
On our cul-de-sac, we had maybe 20 kids, but we left the house at 730 to take our son trick or treating around the block to Grandma's house down the street.
It was my first time out trick or treating since I was in junior high. It was a really fun experience taking my son out for his first time. He's not walking yet, but I can only imagine how much fun his birthdays will be going forward

We had about 50 - 75 in Edgemont. Pretty normal year. After 8:00 it was a ghost town.
My son's birthday is on halloween and it's his favorite day of the year by a wide margin. Lucky kid!

I don't care how old they are, as long as they make an effort to dress up.
Regardless I give them candy, just less if there is no effort.

I'm currently working on installing a Rancor Pit under my front porch for next year.
"No effort? Say hi to my Rancor."

44 kids total in Cranston.
Didn't have a single kid over the age of 10-ish. And nobody after 8:00. Weird.

The Rancor would wind up just being my dog and all he does is lick people in the face. But over time that gets pretty annoying.

I really think people have a responsibility to their community to be home for trick or treaters. It's literally the only night of the year you have to give back to your neighbours in an overt, participatory way. I think it's a little selfish to leave your house unattended and unavailable to other trick or treaters while you go to their house and expect your kid to be able to enjoy the Halloween experience from others that made the effort to be available for your family.
One of you guys could have stayed home while the other parent took the kid. To be honest, I think you kind of jumped the gun on taking a one year old out trick or treating, anyway, although I totally give you a pass on that as it's an exciting night and fun to get out there and be a part of it.
