New Orleans Mayor Ray Nagin declared Martial Law in the city and directed the city's 1,500 person police force to do "whatever it takes" to regain control of the city.
Well, thats step 1. Lets see if they follow through on my step 2.

All over the city. NOLA averages a murder a day.
There are elemtry schools in eastern NOLA that have signs on them saying "No Guns or Drugs aloud in school".
Those things are completely foriegn to us, but they deal with it on a daily basis.

Does anyone else think the response from the feds left a little to be desired. I mean break out the amphibious troup transports, get in a fleet (is that appropriate) of choppers, hospital tents, water purification tents, isn't there just a ton more that could've been done?
Frustrating. And yes I know there are logistical nightmares but hell.
What are 1500ish Police going to do against a gang of thousands of hungry po'd plunderers??

No kidding. Especially considering that there was a day or 2 of warning. They could have started making tent villages.
They can spend $182 million/day in Iraq, but their own people have to fend for themselves for the most part. I'd be angry if I lived there.

Bush cut funding for FEMA, so that he could spend more on his pet project in Iraq. Don't get me wrong, I do realize that terrorism is a real threat. But frankly, mother nature can kick our asses just as badly, and, in a case like this, far more than terrorism ever has.
Personally, I find it horribly disheartening that everyone is acting as if he's a damned savior because he had the intelligence to cut his five-week long vacation short for this. He'd damn well better have cut it short, one of the major cities in the country he governs--as well as one of the largest ports in the world, is under water. This isn't a time for vacations, this is a time for action.

The guy they are interviewing on CNN right now is so obviously a crack head. I have no idea why they are bothering trying to interview him. He's not answering the questions or anything.

Even worse. I'm listening to Canada AM right now and the engineers asked for money to improve the levees. Louissiana pleaded with the federal government for funding to make the levees higher and wider. The engineer that they are interviewing said that the funding proposal was to make the levees strong enough to withstand a category 5 because the current ones were only strong enough to withstand a weak category 3.
However, that money was denied and given to Homeland Security.

Halifax?
|
Eh?
I don't get it....
During Juan there was some looting, but nothing like we've seen in New Orleans:
Quote:
Damage to our coastal regions, wharves and the selective deforestation of landmarks such as Point Pleasant Park and the Halifax Public Gardens are shocking reminders of the fierce weather brought upon the province by Hurricane Juan. Given the darkened state of the city, police have been busier than normal. HRM RCMP experienced double the regular number of calls in a 24-hour period and Halifax Regional Police have had three times their normal total, as they each dealt with reports of looting, vandalism and an occasional mischief call. The activity of the Halifax firefighters is almost 10 times its regular level, with most calls due to small fires and alarm malfunctions.
|
[/b][/quote]
Before your time apparently . . . . . google Halifax Riot.
Where did these people come from? They were there all the time. Just like they exist in any community right now.
They're also here in Calgary right now. Take the police out and watch what happens.
One error the authorities made early was not shooting looters on sight . . . . that would have been a significant deterrent for the majority who seem perfectly capable of walking to Wal-Green to kick in the doors but can't seem to make it to emergency centers.

I can understand people looting food and water and what else is needed to live. These people have not been aloud in their homes, have had no electicity. What are these people supposed to eat? The MRE's haven't arrived yet. And those will be sent to shelters first.
But people taking tv's and stereo's should be shot on sight.

C'mon . . . . they can wade through water to get to JC Penny's but they can't wade a bit farther to the Superdome or some other shelter?
They were out of bread and water within hours of the hurricane ending?
They're wading to the place they're looting, then they're wading home with the loot. That's what's going on.

You mean the shelters that are being evacuated under gunfire?
Have you watched the news lately, there are crowds as far as you can see of people outside the superdome waiting to get taken somewhere. And yeah, it is a lot easier to wade to your corner store, then to swim 10 miles to the superdome or whatever. The violence is deplorable, but time to give up protecting the "stuff" in the stores of a city that won't be running for another 3 months. These people have lost whatever little they had in their life, who cares if they are taking what they think they need from the shops.
And some people were out of bread and water within hours. There is no drinkable, water in the city and many have no homes or nowhere to go. You think they had bread on their back?

The one that passes me off the most is that they are holding up ambulances. There are people that need emergency medical care, and these people are worried about their next fix, or think it would be cool to steal an ambulance? Get a fricking grip. Go ahead and steal a damn tv, but leave those who need help alone. Let them get their help.

Wow. Definitely before my time.... before my father's time.
And I guess it's something people just don't talk about. Lived there 24 years and never heard a whisper about it before.
-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-
I'm not presenting this as my opinion, but this was what one of the folks that I go to coffee break said today:
"I'm not giving one red cent to the Red Cross for this mess. This is on the U.S. to fix. Their government doesn't want to pay to upgrade the levees, but rather divert the money to homeland security. Their government has been slow to react to the situation, hampered by the fact that most of their soldiers and a fair chunk of their National Guard is in Iraq. Why couldn't they get the sandbags in place? Well, where do you think the military helicopters are? The people of Louisiana CHOSE the situation they are now in. They made their bed. Let them sleep in it."
Obviously not my opinion, as I have sent $50 to the Red Cross and think everyone should send what they can afford. I think these people need help regardless of their political beliefs. And I think the Red Cross is doing everything in their power to help these people. Just thought it an interesting POV.

Well I gave my $100 to the Red Cross. This is fataing crazy.
We all know that when a disaster happens else where the US normally offers aid but how come no one is offering aid to the US. I might be wrong but I have not heard any other country offering aid other than a small article in the Sun that mentioned Canada is monitoring the situation and will offer what ever is needed but no details yet.

I agree. WTF is a TV going to do for you. Risk your life for a TV???
They need to get their shinguard together and get that city unde contrl or any aid that is coming will be tough to get to where it is needed.

I may be wrong on this as I heard it second hand, but I heard Holland has offered engineers to help rebuild/inprove the levee as well as clean up the mess. Like I said I heard this from a co-worker, but this does seem likely, as who would have better experience in this sort of thing than the dutch.

The whole situation is unbelievable. I mean this was probably the worst case senario.
The cleanup and the cost is going to be astronomical. Even after they drain out the water (after they fix the levees) the entire city needs to be rebuilt. To me other the the major loss of life and having no warning, this disaster could end up being way worse then 9-11.
