Makes me happy that the nucks are paying way too much for mid tier players.
Makes me sad that they are raising the comparable bar when we need to sign our own guys.

Yawn. The numbers are in-line with what players like Lars Eller, Sean Couturier, and Artem Anisimov received on recent contract extensions. Like it or not, high-end third-line centres get paid roughly this amount for their unrestricted free agent seasons.

Couturier and Anisimov are much better hockey players than Sutter. Eller seems overpaid given his accomplishments to date. Not sure how any of this makes Sutter's contract look better.
For the record I think he's overpaid by about 750k, it's not the end of the word. Maybe 1-2 years too long on the term. What makes it really bad is when you line it up with all the other deals Benning has signed. Good thing you guys don't have any decent RFAs to worry about signing.

Who is our #2 center if Backlund is #3? Backlund was pretty clearly the #1 guy in Monahan's rookie year.
The ppg changes drastically when you have malkin/Crosby and Monahan ahead of you on the pp.
Backlund dropped from 11 pp pts in 2013-14 to 1 pp pt last year? He isn't that much worse of an offensive player... just moved down off the #1 PP.

I don't think the contract is ridiculous. Maybe a little steep but I also think Frolik, Backlund and Stajan are all overpaid too. Maybe I need to adjust my perspective. But they should have gotten more for their assets in this trade. Not much doubt there.

But yes, I do agree the price they paid for him was steep. I think that some discount what Clendening *could* become. Many Canucks fans had him slotted as their 7th D this year.
As for Sutter not being a UFA, all the years bought in his next contract are UFA years. if I understand the UFA rules correctly its 27 y.o. or 7 yrs in the NHL, and he'll be 27 next year. So in that sense it is comparable. Imagine if they let Sutter walk next year without getting him locked up - Benning effigies would burn.
And finally, there are some (re: Pierre Maguire) that subscribe to having a 'do anything' Center to build around (7 player formula). Remember when we had Yelle (aka Sandbox)? We loved him because he did everything. I'm not saying I'd pay him 4.4mill a year, but he was a big part of the 03-04 run. Perhaps that's what Benning is banking on.
|
well, not really...Calgary overpaid for Frolik because they were competing against other teams trying to secure his services during the first day of the UFA frenzy. Overpaying for Sutter when you are the only team in the bidding isn't comparable.
However... if we pay Gio 9million a year on his extension...

It's a reference to going forward - Bennett will move ahead of him within a year IMO.
Also, fans seem to get way too hung up on first line, second line, third line, etc.
Even though Backlund was our #2 last year, his linemates and assignments were more of a defensive role anyways. So he was playing somewhat of a third line role even though he was our second best C.
The point, in the comparison to Sutter, was that Backlund will be the guy going forward, who will be utilized most similarly to Sutter. And he is a better player. And he costs less.

I cannot wait to see what Bennett can do this season.
Hes not getting thrown to the wolves, he'll be sheltered behind Monahan and he'll have Backlund and Stajan to show him the ropes.
It'll be interesting to see the difference between when Bennett is asked to play hard minutes and when Hartley takes the shackles off.

Unfortunately there is not one salary cap for UFA's and a separate one for RFA's.

Anisimov, and especially Couturier, are far superior to Sutter. He should be thanking the gods that his last name is Sutter.

man those NTC's really handicap a team. I'd be so loathe to hand them out as a GM.

Wait, they changed his existing current year's contract?

Under the new CBA, if a player signs a contract extension that includes a No-Trade or No-Move clause, that clause can be retroactively added to his existing contract as well (if the player is eligible to have such a clause on his contract).

If you're handing out an NTC, the team should be negotiating some kind of break on the AAV. They didn't get that.
