Maybe it's because of the 500 hulking free agents they brought in?

At the expense of the players they drafted and spent money developing? I would think/hope not.

You can only look at so many people at one time. What exactly are you going to learn from Baertstchi, Knight, Monahan, Reinhart, etc. that you don't already know, or won't find out in training camp?
Spread your attention too thin and you won't have good insight on anyone.

I think it's more a case of the constraints of numbers
Too many players there and some will simply get buried.
If Monahan, Baertschi, Agostino, Hanowski, Khight, Granlund, Reinhart etc are all there, it becomes much more difficult to get a good look at the younger, newer guys.
The Flames know these players, they want to see the new ones.

Don't really think it's a 2 camp thing, Arnold and Gaudreau are both at more than 2 camps.
Think the breakdown is pro vs prospect.
Any of the players that played a full pro season last year, AHL or NHL, didn't get the invite.
I like that technique. The guys that were already in the organization should already be in close contact and have an idea of what they need to do.
This puts the focus on guys that are outside the Flames organization and are developing in different places that are not controlled by the Flames.

exactly. i don't see a point for guys who have played in the Pros (ie. AHL/NHL) coming to these camps.
Baertchi/monahan/reinhart/granlund/ramage/wotherspoon/ferland/knight... etc, etc, played with the heat/ECHL last year, and no surprise they aren't at this camp (other than ferland i believe).

I have a feeling that it has allot to do with Sven already having two seasons of full time contact with our current coaching staff. While Johnny has only had a few months + the previous 3 camps.
Maybe they want to avoid Redundancy for guys that have already spent allot of time with coaches employed by the Flames.

finally flames player/prospect related stories coming up this week...
Here's one on klimchuk:
Regarding camp with new management/new prospects:
Quote:
“I’m really excited for it,” says the 28th pick of the 2013 NHL draft. “Whenever you get a chance to make an impression on anyone in the organization — especially all the new faces — it’s an opportunity. Going into camp, that’s what I’m looking to do — make an impression.
“You can’t make the team out of development camp, but you can definitely show what you can do.”
At last summer’s camp, there had been no Brad Pascall, no Burke, no Treliving.
And no Sam Bennett for that matter.
Or Hunter Smith. Or Brandon Hickey.
So there’s a desire to re-establish the pecking order.
“Whenever there’s new players joining the organization,” says Klimchuk, “you want to see how you stack up. And having Treliving there — he probably hasn’t seen a lot of us play in person lately — that’s something I’m definitely looking forward to ... showing them that, come training camp in September, I’m looking to play a big role.”
|
On bennet:
Quote:
The forwards skated on the national under-18 side last spring and, in fact, had been roommates on the gold-winning entry at the world championship in Sochi, Russia.
“I know him quite well,” says Klimchuk, a left-winger. “A great person and an even better player.”
So when his employers chose Bennett?
“I was really excited,” he says. “For the Flames to get a guy like that, who I am pretty familiar with? It’s very beneficial because you can skip the introduction.”
Asked for a snapshot of his chum, Klimchuk doesn’t hesitate.
“Real good all-around player — he does it all. He’s someone who doesn’t like to get pushed around. He can contribute on all sides of the puck. Good with the puck. Good away from the puck. It shows why he was the fourth-overall pick. He could have been the first-overall pick — he’s that good.”

Volek probably scouted the Czech kid, if he is still with us. I think Woodcroft focuses more on Russia if I am not mistaken

Woodcraft was supposed to help focus on Russia, but IIRC, was going to be something like the 'director of European scouting' (might be off on the title, but at least close to the job function). I actually haven't heard of Volek, but if scouting involves the Czech republic, you are probably right then!

Updated Euro info:
Some info when it comes to Euros (playing overseas) and invitations to summer development camps:
For a European player, in the past there have been cases where there were visa issues complicating ability to attend the summer camp, even for a drafted player.
"The CBA (8.9) rules are different for signing a European prospect in the off-season if the player is younger and did not play in North America for the entire prior season. As we have seen in the past, with Nathan Walker/WSH and Tomas Hyka/PHI two high profile examples, some players attend but are ineligible to be signed. Does not prevent team from inviting or a player from attending, but it does change the situation for younger European prospects who did not play all of last season in North America."
For reference: CBA 8.9 Eligibility for Play in the League
No Player shall be eligible for play in the League unless he:
(a) had been claimed in the last Entry Draft, or was ineligible for claim under Section 8.4; or (b) had been eligible for claim in the last Entry Draft, but was unclaimed,
and:
(i)had played hockey in North America the prior season and was age 20 or older at the time of the last Entry Draft, and signed an SPC which was signed and registered with the League between the conclusion of the Entry Draft and commencement of the next NHL Season.
(ii) had played hockey in North America the prior season and was under age 20 at the time of the last Entry Draft, and signed an SPC which was signed and registered with the League between the conclusion of the Entry Draft and commencement of the Major Juniors season (except that if such Player had signed an NHL try-out form, which was signed and registered with the League during the aforesaid time period, then the deadline for signing and registering with the League an SPC with such try-out Club shall be the commencement of the NHL Season).
(iii) had played hockey outside of North America in the prior season and was age 22 or older at the time of the last Entry Draft and signed an SPC which was signed and registered with the League between the conclusion of the Entry Draft and the commencement of the next NHL Season.
(iv) The words "eligible for claim in the last Entry Draft" in subparagraph (b) above mean "eligible for claim in all rounds of the last Entry Draft." The words "the prior season" in subparagraph (i), (ii) and (iii) above mean "a full season prior to the last Entry Draft."

Not only am I only going to be able to watch Saturday morning's group, but its the afternoon group that has Sam Bennett.
If they are streaming the scrimmage I may be watching it while on vacation. First world problem, I know.
