Can't say I saw this coming.
First reaction is that I hate it. From the outside looking in it looked like the front office finally had stability and a direction. I guess not.
I liked the teams drafting, it seemed the new emphasis on hockey IQ really helped the prospect cupboard. But who knows who is responsible for that.
This seems weird considering a majority of the talk surrounding the Burke hiring was this relatively new structure in Hockey (President and GM) that has worked in football etc etc. If they abandon that structure with all the lip service they paid to it, I would be a little miffed.
If I had to guess I would say Burke takes the GM role and a new President of hockey ops is hired.

If there's a replacement GM I'll be less scared. Don't want Burke with 2 hands on the wheel as we go off the cliff

No one could succeed as GM with Burke above him unless an absolute puppet. I hope he just takes over and owns it all. Not that I'm a big Burke fan - I think he's over-rated - but let him live and die on his own decisions directly not through an intermediary.

Hearing Burke has already begun process of contacting GM candidates. I suspect some familiar names such as Nieuwendyk will be on the list..
Nieuwendyk makes me nervous.

Good god, no! While I realize he was handcuffed by Dallas' ownership mess, he simply was not a good GM

I'm starting to think the decision was based on Feaster not firing Hartley sooner for the way he was treating the young kids during a rebuild.
maybe?

There might be 1 player with top 6 forward potential on the Heat (Granlund), who isn't exactly a sure bet to make it.

Fans want to be optimistic. There were a tonne of Flames fans raving about how Sutter was turning around the drafting back in 05-06 as well.
Boyd and Ryder were going to be top six centers, the prospect goal tending depth was stacked, etc.
With Toronto dropping in the standings, maybe Nonis is starting to feel the heat, and Burke is cleaning off a landing spot for him. haha

I'm not shocked that it happened. Yet I am surprised that it happened. I didn't hate how Feaster's moves went, after the Iginla trade, but there is still nothing there to get super excited about. There is hope, but it is still leaving me wanting more to hope for. I am somewhat surprised about Wiesbrod though. I guess he was a guy from a previous regime so Burke wanted to make a big change/statement.

Burke is expected to act as interim GM until new guy is hired. Poulin, Loiselle, Futa, Benning, Treliving all have cred as candidates.

I mean the more I think about the timing, the less it makes sense. Its not to try and get a GM candidate who could go elsewhere (where else is there to go?). Its not because of the record (What? Did Burke expect playoffs???). Only things I can possibly think of are money (i.e this saves them paying some) or refusal to fall in line with Burke (which anyone could see coming, so why not fire him in July?). Obviously if a trade goes through in the coming days that might be the answer.

since last trade deadline, when the rebuild approach was clearly adopted, what moves have been even remotely negative??

haven't read the thread yet but..... YEAH BABY!!!
Brian Burke, if I didn't love you before, I certainly do now you big beautiful man, you!
And coming up next on the "get the hell of my team" show is Mr. Bob Hartley! Step on up Bob, because you're running on borrowed time time now - feel free to take your assistant coaches with you when you're shown the door.

I think they should contact sureLoss for the next GM.
Guy breaks news, other GM's get crazy, sureLoss takes advantage and, amidst the confusion, trades a 7th round pick for Jonathan Huberdeau.

Early word is Feaster could sense something was going on. Perhaps, on heels of Burke's 60 day assessment for Flames ownership.

Ferland, Knight, Hanowski should make your list. Size, skill, high ceilings.

Big news. Expected to happen, but kinda surprised it was this early into the season. I was figuring it would be more around the end of this season. Thought Weisbrod would've been kept in some capacity as well since he seems to be a key contributor to the past two drafts which have been good.
