do you think Wideman has been a problem? because I think he has been fantastic (as an overall body of work)

He's great on the powerplay.
Away from the powerplay...not so much.

he isn't Larry Robinson that's for sure, but I disagree with you, I think he has been more than decent

With Wideman, I have been quite impressed with his improved defensive play this year, especially with his increased physicality.

His point is he thinks Monahan should be sent back to juniors. I'm pretty sure he's running out of arguments now. Agreeing with Lambert should usually be a good indication of a bad argument.

The fan just to the left of the Staples sign is the best on that Brodie goal...

Other teams will keep doing the same, as it's an obvious weak spot on our team.

I was thinking the same thing. Gio and Wideman are playing a ton and looked pretty gassed to start that PP.
Not sure if Breen is ready or not, but hopefully he gets into to the lineup soon.

Three best Flames tonight:
1. Hudler
2. Squid
3. Ramo
HM: Backlund, Giordano

This may be a dumb question, but who is Squid?

1996 - Briere
1997 - None
1998 - Gomez, Ribero
1999 - None
2000 - None
2001 - Roy, Plekanec
2002 - Alex Steen, Jarret Stoll
2003 - Carter, Parise, Getzlaf, Kessler, Richards, Bergeron
2004 - Dubinsky
2005 - Stastny
2006 - None
2007 - None
2008 - Stepan, Henrique
2009 - O'Reilly, Johanssen
2010 - None
2011 - Boone Jenner
2012 - None
Only in the outlier year of 2003 were there real quality "build your team around" centres available after the Flames picked, and we took Phaneuf that year which is a pretty impossible pick to fault.
Even in the Rico Fata year the guys we missed out on were Gomez and Ribero, neither of whom went anywhere near the Flames' choice.
|
Passing on Getzlaf was monumentally stupid. He should have gone in the top 5, or at least top 10. Even at the time he was expected to go much higher than he did. I hope drafting Phaneuf, who they traded for a bag of pucks a few years later, was worth missing a franchise player like that.

This. He's actually developing a talent for separating players from the puck, pretty impressive. I only saw him shy away once and that was against 44

Great point....will be watching for this in future games (I think we play the Kings 5 times this year), though I doubt Carcillo will drop the mitts with McGrattan. He's more of the 'weasel' type.

A few other teams passed on him too. Hindsight is easy, isn't it?

It is. I'm just bitter thinking about what could have been. He was ranked higher than Phaneuf on central scouting and the Flames didn't have a #1 center at the time so I really don't know why they passed on him.
OH WELL.

Getzlaf was one of the laziest players I can remember on the Hitmen. It was a huge gamble to draft him. Hindsight is 20/20.

Was very impressed with the powerplay too... Especially entry into the zone. The flames started using the old Detroit system of having a forward circle back to gain speed and then the defenseman drops it back to him in the neutral zone so the other team is already too deep in their zone to adjust to the speed of the forward. The flames used cammalleri and hudler as the forward on this play and they did a good job.

Yea, it's very easy to look back now and say they should have drafted Corey Perry, Getzlaf, Bergereon, Howard, Burns, Seabrook.... but Getzlaf at the time of the draft was actually slated to be drafted very high. But I guess teams must have seen some serious flaws in his game if he fell to 18th overall, so whatever.
This is a very pointless discussion though. I'll stop now.
