Ah, so that’s where Mel got it from. Haha.
Anyway, I didn’t even mind the video: how amazing that Democrats have partisans who prefer some candidates to others!

So the Young Turks rebranded as Rebel? That's... confusing. I understand it, because it's always been an ongoing reminder of Cenk's denial of the Armenian genocide. But it's a pretty dumb and self-indulgent name (not unlike "The Resistance").

Not quite, only their sub-channel TYT Politics rebranded as Rebel HQ.

Well then I don't get it at all.
Hilarious for them to try to compare Biden to Trump, when you see what Trump said in his rally yesterday. Try to imagine Biden saying that. Unless he also succumbs to dementia, I suppose.
Anyway, just read the comments (I know, I know) to get a good sense of why Trump is probably getting 4 more years.

The GOP smear machine cranks up against Buttigieg:

Yeah totally, I mean how dare those petulant children expect the entire process to not be rigged against their candidate; that's clearly asking too much!!

Biden with 49% support among Democrats earning < 50K. All other contenders under 10%.

Since it's likely a lot of the Harris and Beto vote would fall to Biden once they're out, it's looking tough for Bernie. But we still haven't had a single debate, so we'll see how things change once those start,

Bernie’s more mainstream palatable positions have been adopted by the majority of the field. It’s no surprise he comes in low like that, now he’s more of an angry old man yelling and will be forced to go more extreme to carve out a spot. It’s stupid early still but Biden has to always be the front runner. The most common response to the kind of clown show the current administration is is not to go even more zany, it’s a return to normalcy. Biden represents a return to “traditional” politics. That’s going to attract a lot of centrists just with the optics.

Well, it's an early poll, so the name recognition associated with the former Vice President is going to give him a leg up. But I agree about it being surprising that Sanders showed so poorly, given that he has to be about as well known as Biden at this point.
Meh, it's one poll. Long way to go.

Sanders polls took a hit with Biden's announcement. I think Bernie had a chunk of people voting for the best old, white guy. And some of the younger Bernie supporters are jumping on the Buttigieg bandwagon.
If Bernie is not even close in the first few primaries, that should be good news for Democratic nominee in that there won't be another Bernie Bros revolt.
Biden has very widespread geographic support and if his campaign runs smoothly and he doesn't die, he could have blow out primary and general election victories.

Keep belittling people who don't see eye-to-eye with you on some issues, then wonder why those same people don't place their vote where you want them to place their vote.
The Democratic party can either learn from its mistake in 2016, or it can repeat it and hand Trump a 2nd term. The choice is theirs.

Some candy for Cliff in the NYT opinion section: https://www.nytimes.com/2019/05/02/o...democrats.html
Quote:
The Democratic Party is facing disruption from the top. In the early stages of the current political season, Democratic rank and file seem to be embracing Biden and his traditional Democratic themes. It’s the coastal, highly educated elites who are fed up and want something transformative.
In other words, the Republican story is a story of populist radicalization; the Democratic story so far is a story of elite radicalization.
|
Quote:
The Diploma Divide among Democrats this year isn’t as stark as the one between Republicans in 2016. Joe Biden is popular among all Democratic groups. For example, according to a recent CNN poll, he’s just as popular as Bernie Sanders among people who call themselves “very liberal.”
But, there may be a growing Democratic Diploma Divide. As Martin Longman points out in Washington Monthly, less-educated, older voters are more likely to support Biden. Bernie Sanders, with his more outsiderish, disruptive campaign, is more competitive with more educated, younger voters.
|
Quote:
In 2020, if you live on the coasts, follow politics intensely and hang around college-educated people, it’s easy to think that the disruptive Democratic forces have the upper hand. If AOC shows up on your Twitter feed every 30 seconds, then you were probably surprised by the giant lead Biden has established since announcing his candidacy. Seemingly nobody on Twitter supports Biden.
If you live in these circles, it’s worth remembering that a majority of Democrats are over 50. In a recent Gallup survey, a majority of Democrats said the party would be better off moving to the center than to the left.
In short, don’t underestimate the Democratic rank and file.

Anecdotally, I've seen a lot of popular progressives on Youtube and other platforms really going after Biden, Buttigiegg and the other more centrist candidates. There seems to be an organized leftist populist groundswell for Bernie. My fear is that the Democrats didn't learn their lesson from 2016 and if a centrist wins the nomination they will again employ their leftist purity test and give Trump an opportunity to take advantage. Or it may leave a lane for Tulsi to drive through.
For the sake of all of us, I hope the Dems keep their eye on the goal and not get bogged down too deeply in the ideological muck.

The Guardian has been going after O'Rourke, Buttigiegg, and especially Biden with unrelenting hit pieces. There are few angrier voices in politics than activists who perceive a threat to the long-awaited revolution.
