I can understand the reasoning behind not extending a 29 year old Kuzmenko for 7-8 years, but for 3-4? Really don't see an issue with that. The argument is that many other teams could use a pure goal scorer in their lineup, but for whatever reason, they don't admit the Flames could too!
If the market is only giving you a 2nd, then I think it's worth the Flames considering extending him for 3-4 years if Kuzmenko is willing to sign. Having a dynamic scorer is something that would benefit the kids on the team. He isn't great defensively but not every player is, and coaches need to understand and accept that and not try to make every player a solid defensive forward.

The real wild card is if the Flames find themselves in a position to draft Demidov.
Then, a long term Kuzmenko deal begins to make more sense.

Haven’t finished the season yet and we’re ready to abandon a rebuild eh? Nice.
Build your value and enjoy your next destination pal. Maybe it’ll be sunny

Kuzmenko looks far more confident the last couple games. He seems to have way more energy with the puck and is trying creative things no one else on the roster is really capable of. He's starting to remind me of Huselius a bit.

Every rebuilding roster needs to be filled out with a few vets on short-to-medium term contracts. Chicago has its Halls and Folignos, Anaheim its Killorns and Fowlers, etc. Can’t have the kids mentoring themselves.

Sure.
But sign those guys via UFA and trade those same types of players you currently have for assets (then trade those same players you signed as UFA right before their contracts end and the new era is ready).

The Flames don't really need anything but enough bodies to ice a roster over the next three years. A second for Kuzmenko would be great and then the Flames can use the cap space to continue trying to flip players for picks. I also think the only way Kuzmenko stays in Calgary is on an overpay. If he has good season next year a playoff team will give him a contract.

That’s fair. The only thing I’d add is if you’ve already got a guy who fits, is working out well and wants to be here, it might be worth it to keep him around until his UFA year.

Calgary has Kadri, Huberdeau, Backlund and Rasmus on the back end. Plenty of aging talent is always easily available

So if you don't trade away every single player over a certain age, you are abandoning the rebuild?
Good to know.

I offer no opinion as to whether the Flames should keep Kuzmenko or not.
But if they value his positive attitude and want to keep him on the team for that reason, that's valid. You can always sign aging UFAs with bad attitudes. The good ones are much less likely to get dumped on the open market.

Kuzmenko has looked great the last few games. I hope they keep him around next year. I’d like to see what he can do.

That wasn't a bullet. That was a 155-mm shell.

If Kuzmenko plays so well that his value is high enough for a 1st, you absolutely trade him. If he's only playing decent enough where you can get a 2nd or 3rd, is he really worth re-signing at that point? I'd still take the pick and let him walk.
Ya he has high end skill and you need players even during a rebuild but rather get a more defensively well rounded plug and let our rookies be the ones with a longer offensive leash and room for mistakes on the back end. The only reason you even give Kuzmenko that leash right now is to pump his value in an effort to dump NOT re-sign him.
No matter how I look at it, if our philosophy is to start actually maximizing on assets instead of what we've done for years, you trade him at the deadline next year.

This is how you do "player rehabbing" correctly (unlike the No Goods)
