What would he do for the Devils with the high end talent they boast?

Its worth contemplating. Keep in mind how long the Devils have been rebuilding for. They need to follow up last years success, so they need a now move that bumps the needle.

Hence markstrom.

Would be incredible to get Mercer. How often do teams chasing the playoffs and entering their competitive window trade a 21 year old center who is frequently playing in their top six? It’s very rare let alone for a 34 year old goaltender. Not saying it can’t/won’t happen. Just that it’s extremely rare for a team to pay that kind of premium for a goaltender.

Not that high for the best rental center to move in a while.

It’s crazy to think that the Devils can even afford to move Mercer.
The perks of having 2 1st overalls down the middle I guess

What was Filip Forsberg traded for again?

Edit: Martin Erat

Not convinced ‘automatic firing’ is the accurate term. ‘Risky’ sure.
"Automatic firing" is up there with things that should never be uttered again.

Triggered!

I liken it to Colorado acquiring Roy when they did. It instantly pushed a good team over the top and made them champs. Goalies like Markstrom under contract for three cup runs and playing at the top of their games simply don’t become available very often. He should return a boatload.

The people who don't think a 22 year old center who has a near 60 point season under his belt can't ever produce like a top line center in the NHL have very short memories. We just traded away this exact scenario.

Actually, Lindholm was worse than Mercer by a fair margin when we acquired him.

6 goals.

2 from Martin Erat and 4 from Michael Latta.

Forsberg is at 264 and counting.

Nashville hit a homerun with this one.

*alternative non-Debbie Downer translation*

A highly touted prospect, coming off an elite rookie campaignn looking for a change of scenery after becoming new head coaches whipping boy, some young prospects with very high ceilings and a first rounder.

Pretty good for a expiring contract of a player that was pretty vocal that he didn't want to be here and had a level of play to match.

Such a win win for me if this goes through.

Another piece into the retool that we didn't expect.
Negative asset to huge asset in 4 months.
More futures.
Markstrom out so Calgary draft position improves.
And Markstrom to a team I could get behind in the East.

As a caps fan I’m still bitter about this one. Not like that piece ended up contributing to their cup either. Like they win that cup sooner with Forsberg haha

IF Dawson is on the table, expect the package to be less than previously communicated.

You said the most key part of that yourself right there: rental

Brz "Adam fox of the OHL" a future bust. We'll bookmark that one for a couple years from now.

A 1st is a 1st. Canucks will choke as they always do, bumping the selection up.

It's 5 pieces that will enter the flames system for the foreseeable future for 3 months of Lindholm.

That’s a great example. That trade happened almost a decade ago so it shows how rare a trade like that is. The caps traded Forsberg for Martin Erat. What a terrible trade for Washington. Would be incredible for Conroy to pull something like that off with Markstrom.
