Mercer would be great with his ability to play some centre and 2 way game but even Holtz would be a good add and found money given the shift in Markstrom's value. He's got a great right handed shot and good offensive instincts and has been bouncing between their 3rd and 4th lines and on 2nd powerplay unit at best. He seems like a ready made replacement for Kuz at RW as a trigger man for Hubderdeau long run.
Mercer's more valuable contract wise as well even though he's expiring, Holtz has a another full year to run on his deal and probably won't lock in on the back of this season, so the flames are going to be in a position where if he sees a ton of ice and kills next year it will cost a lot of money, not much of an opportunity for a value contract. Mercer's up this season and feels like he could be locked up for a while on a deal that could end up being pretty team friendly.

Should also add, I frickin love this time of year. Trade rumours are so deliciously exciting. Love what Conroy has done to this point, keep it going big guy.

His floor is probably a 3rd line C.

Mercer offensively will never be a first line center.

I doubt you will ever get a top line centre in a mid-season trade like this.

The fact that Fitz is following up with them when their position on markstrom is, basically, "convince us to approach him to waive" tells me the return being discussed has to be pretty significant.
The Flames didn't seek this out. They're being approached.

Lifetime Suspension

If anyone traded a 22 year old first line C for a 34 year old goalie retained or not, that would be an automatic firing.
Mercer is probably a middle 6 player, but even getting that for Markstrom is great. The plus plus seems to be for salary retention.

I think the goal is 2nd line center.

In that case, I certainly hope the deal gets done.
I'd have to book my tickets to the draft again.

First Line Centre

Mercer has higher potential and value than Holtz.
Mercer is already a top 6 player and would fit in like a glove here.
Let's hope he's included.

Don’t disagree my point was only that Mercer is not some super stud. Best case scenario he may turn into a 70 point second line center and worse case scenario is he is a 40 point third line center. The idea that him or Markstrom straight up is highway robbery is mistaken in my opinion, especially if the Flames retain significant salary. The Flames are trading a former vezina nominee who may be nominated again this year who has term. That is a player who never gets traded so comparing him to other trades is not overly relevant IMO.

What if the deal includes retention and ‘bad’ money coming back? What if the Devils go one to win series/compete or win a cup?
Not convinced ‘automatic firing’ is the accurate term. ‘Risky’ sure.

I’d love to see both coming back. Mercer might top out as a 2C but that’s a huge piece. Maybe Holtz becomes nothing, or maybe he flourishes with a change of scenery. Getting 2 high end pieces could be franchise altering

A 70 point center is definitely a 1st line player imo
In any case Mercer is speedy and has silky mitts. I hope we get him because he can be fun to watch.

I'm fine with giving Holtz the Sharangovich treatment and potentially winding up with a 20-25 goal guy
But I'd prefer him as a secondary piece to the centerpiece of the deal.

With Tanev almost 100% being traded, I would love to get Siegenthaler back as part of trade with NJ. He is signed long term at a reasonable amount and could fill that hole a little bit.

It makes no sense to me unless you are definitely flipping Kuzy.

If Mercer is not in play and Holtz is the player we get then I'd take him. Can't be sure that Kuzmenko will want to re-sign here at the end of next year, or that Coronato will be a top 6 winger either. Holtz would be good insurance policy in case either of those two scenarios happen and if not and we have 3 RW fighting for 1st and 2nd line duty then we have a bargaining chip to fix a hole somewhere else on the roster.
