Don't believe it but if Treliving passed on Tkachuk for Hischier/Bratt I'd be pissed.

I would believe it if Hischier wasn’t included. That just completely shot down the rumor.

If BT had a chance to land Hischier and Bratt for Tkachuk and didn't pull the trigger he should be canned. I don't believe Brad is that incompetent, just a rumour.

Hischier is starting to come into his own and I can’t see the Devils wanting to move him in any deal. They look to have a great thing going with their center depth.

You weren't getting Hischier and Bratt for Tkachuk.

Bratt had 73 points in 76 games
Hischier had 60 in 70 games.

They were the Devils two leading scorers.

Maaaaybe you could get one of them, maybe. Not a chance you're getting both.

Much more likely would have been:

One of Bratt/Hischier
Ty Smith

I could actually see that potentially. And in that case the Flames should circle back now. Tkachuk is the better player but Hischier is a year younger, plays the premier position, and his 5 years at $7.25M remaining would make him a way more attractive asset from a cap and roster building perspective.

I could see why they wouldn't have done it at the draft though. At that point it pretty much means Hischier + Smith for Tkachuk plus the guarantee that you're losing Gaudreau only to see the two of them re-unite in New Jersey.

This place would have lost it if we traded Tkachuk to New Jersey and then Gaudreau signed there a week later. Treliving would have been crucified for setting up the reunion of those two and driving Johnny to New Jersey.

If it was all of Bratt + Hischier and Smith I take that deal and running knowing how Johnny transpired.

My thoughts are it doesn't exist but if it did there's no reason not to still do the deal considering it didn't involve draft pieces.

Its fine to negotiate and not win them all but to always be the runner up and have everyone aware of your plan doesn't look good.

Ahh I miss read, a combination likely meant it was one of Bratt/Hischier + Smith

It’s an interesting thing to consider; if it was one of Hischier/Bratt + Smith I feel like a little more is needed; if it was Hischier + Bratt you take it and run. Sounds like a rumour for sure; wasn’t the original rumour involving the 2nd overall?

They weren't runner up on any of Tanev, Markstrom, Coleman, Neal, etc.

The idea that being involved in trades/ufa discussions and then missing out being a bad thing is flawed.

Worst case it might mean your rival has to pay more (see Eichel and Vegas), best case you actually end up with the player in the end.

Columbus fans have had the same criticisms of Jarmo - and look it worked out this time. Lots of teams appear like they didn't even make an offer to Gaudreau because "he'll never come here".

Jarmo easily could have sat on his hands and done the same thing, but nope he sent over an offer. And look it actually worked out for him this time.

Being active and missing out is the much better alternative than just not trying at all. Honestly not even trying or sending over an inquiry is just being lazy - how many times does a trade happen and you hear "I didn't even know he was available" leaked to the media from another GM - and the GM doesn't realize he's just telling on himself in that scenario.

I feel like that is really overvaluing Tkachuk. Teams aren't handing out both their young studs for him. 1 sure.

Avs sign 33 year old journeyman Brad Hunt to a 2 year deal, might spell the end of Sam Girard and his 5 mill cap hit if they’re trying to make space for Kadri

It's a hockey market

Oilers and Leafs are in on everything too according to the media, they want eyeballs. Teams should inquire about every player they think will help them.

The Avs have been rumoured to be looking at moving Girard since last year’s playoff loss to Vegas. Hard to see where he’d fit on the Flames unless Hanifin was moved.

If we are looking for some low cost additions that could fit the Sutter style of hockey, what about these players?

Tanner Pearson/Jason Dickinson. With Vancouver trying to lose cap, probably can be had for super cheap. Pearson has a limited NTC but he won a cup with Sutter, maybe some history there (and played with Tofolli in Vancouver). Either/both could be had for a low draft pick, or even come with a pick in Van is desperate to lose cap.

Joonas Donskoi. W and plays an honest game. Good rebound candidate.
Coming off an awful season with Seattle so might be good for both parties to make a change. This might be a situation where you might be able to send Lucic back in a deal with his signing bonus paid and he's close to his home in Vancouver. If not, would they take a flyer on Monahan and hope for a rebound? R

Poolparty. Less likely but he has the size and maybe Darryl can get through to him. Would Holland gift him to us (low pick), probably not as we burned him on the Lucic/Neal deal. With proper coaching, might flourish in a Sutter system.

Longer shots:

Duchene/Johansen. Neither screams Sutter player but if we could offload Monahan they might go for it to get out from the final 3/4 years of the deals for either player. I'm not sure how keen either player would be on coming here so if that's the case, stay away

Nick Schmaltz. This would be my preferred target for Monahan (or maybe Lucic). Coyotes looking to get away from committed salary and salaries are pretty much a wash for this year. But believe the Flames have looked at this player before, and would help our depth at C. Can see him slotting in nicely as 2C and let Backlund look after 3C duties full time.

Nick Schmaltz is quite good, he could be moved for substantial value today, like draft picks, if they so chose.

He wouldn't have to be moved for a cap dump back, although if Arizona chose to do so, it would increase the return to them.

Think Schmaltz for Calgary's 2023 1st round pick, Pelltier, plus Monahan. You can likely add Lucic to that as he is easily movable.

Could mean absolutely nothing but Klingberg started to follow several of the Flames Swedish players as well as Coleman on social media. Appears to be getting some attention from Flames fans online
