With our first line gone it won't be pretty but we'd be going into a strong draft with 4 firsts and a ton of cap space
Mangi - Backlund - Coleman
Debrusk - Stutzle - Toffoli
Dube - Monahan - Ruzicka
Lucic - Rooney - Phillips
Lewis
Kylington - Tanev
Byram - Andersson
Zadorov - Mackey
Markstrom
Vladar
We'd be a lottery team but 4 1sts and ~20m in cap space @ the draft is worth it imo.
In 2 years almost all of our current contracts are off the books. It's the perfect opportunity to go for a clean slate with some up and coming talent. You've got Stutzle and Byram as shots for that #1C/D we need along with Pelletier, Coronato and Zary in the wings. If we can hit on 2/4 firsts we could be looking really competitive in 2024/2025 after the rest of our current core is off the books.
Anyways I know it's a far fetched pipe dream but it was fun!
|
Fun for sure, but they wouldn't be competitive in 2 seasons. Try 4 and that's if the Flames hit on their picks. If they did hit, they'd be competing for the wild card in 4 years with a very young team.

I’d imagine Kadri is asking as high as 8.5 but he will have to come down. Will most likely settle for 7 and change somewhere. I’d take him for 4 to 5 years at 7 to 7.5 but it’s no secret he’s only getting older and his career year last year was on a juggernaut team.

Neids would be a solid addition for the right price though, overpaying for him has the feelings of another Brouweresque buyout. Sam Steel and Milano would both be decent players who are still relatively young to take flyers on. Still hoping we can subtract Lucic’s caphit to Anaheim, as much as I love the guy we need foot speed added into the bottom 6.

I like Sam Steel a lot. Not sure what was preventing growth in Anaheim but he was a dynamite Dub player. Talked about a lot like Brayden Point. I'd take a flyer for sure.
Nino is a dime a dozen guy imo. Name and former draft position have him talked about still, but this guy is like Brad Boyes or something, very meh middle of the lineup offensive talent that is probably asking for too much. I don't think he's good for competing or rebuilding, lol.

Boy I think if you wanted to offer sheet someone I would do Jason Robertson. 22 years old and a pt/game on an offensively challenged Dallas squad, however we don't have the 3rd round pick to make it happen. Yes I am aware offer sheets rarely happen so save that response

Second line C is a big hole, yes. Offering $8M per to someone to fill it is a horrific idea though.

If they sign Kadri to a 5 x 8 million, it would instantly be one of the worst contracts in the NHL.

If I were Kadri I would be looking for a chance to win again.
Why would I sign with the Flames when there is a chance that Tkachuk is going to leave the team next year.
Right now I would think that the Flames are talking with both Tkachuk and Kadri about signing situations where they would both sign if they were both going to sign.

I think Byfield could play in the NHL but a bottom 6 role, he doesn't have the impact factor you would expect from such a high draft pick. Sadly he's also had injury problems now, I'm not sure I'd trade Hanifin 1 for 1 for Byfield tbh.
|
Patrick always had questionable upside, including pre-draft.
Byfield has been carefully managed by the Kings. He isn't getting put in positions to opportunity to produce offensively at this stage. I suspect he will this year.
He'll be a top line centre.

Let me be clear, I’m not implying he had anything to do with the incident, but Sam Steel was a member of the 2018 WJHC team. I wonder if that is impacting the level of interest he is receiving.

Heard from someone who's related to a Devils' sportswriter that the package available on the Draft Day floor in MTL was: "NJD planwas to use some combination of Bratt, Hischier, Smith to get Tkachuk in a trade." This was also because they thought they had a real shot at John.
Thoughts on that?
