Flames need to get a top end NHL player signed long term just to get rid of this new stigma
Don't really care if it's a million too much or a year too long

Unless he waived for Calgary in which case I think Calgary can opt to honor it going forward or not

At what point in the last 20 years would you say the Flames have been collecting assets?
Of course there's no point if you do it year after year, but there's definitely a point if you do it for a year or two.

because season 1 is a RFA year.
NTC/NMC can only be applied to UFA years.

That's his last RFA year. Players can only receive NTCs after they've completed their seven years' service (and qualified for UFA).

Nope, the option of not honouring it after a trade was removed in the 2020 CBA update.
Even still, it was only an option if the NTC/NMC hadn't yet started (Nashville chose to not honour Subban's NTC when they acquired him from Montreal, for example).
----------
Also, as mentioned, another thing that was changed in the 2020 CBA is if a player's contract extends past the next upcoming trade deadline, he can be signed to an 8-year extension by his current team regardless of when he was acquired. Tkachuk didn't have a contract for 2022-23, so he could only sign for 8 years with the Flames, which is why his contract was a sign and trade. Huberdeau and Weegar can sign 8 year deals with Calgary if they want to.

Nope. I wasn't. I thought he deserved 8 x $9.5 or so. I was happy in many ways he left because I see now how bad contracts can really mess a team up. But at $9.5 I was pretty alright with it.

Just to further add to this, so many people are scared of your number 1 asset leaving for nothing, but if they overachieved and if you even overpay by $1MM/season, and every year they get worse and worse and that contract looks worse, you'll eventually have to pay someone else to take that contract off your hands. When it gets in the millions of dollars for these once all-stars, nobody wants to take on that much salary so you're more or less stuck with them unless you pay a ton. How is that good for your team? So you get said player for 4 years until they decline, then what?
I'm really against long term contracts for aging players. I wouldn't be thrilled with Tkachuk getting a long term contract because I don't believe his skillset translates to star money, but if Gaudreau was that same age (23ish), an 8 year deal makes sense. But at 29? No way. Get a sense of what they want before hand, set arbitrary deadlines, and sell them for other assets. Tampa in particular took a lot of odd gambles this year which I think will bit them hard in a few years.

You know what contracts mess teams up?
Overpaying depth.
You know what contracts don’t mess teams up?
Paying for elite talent.

Yeah I couldn’t care less, but I also believe retiring numbers to never be worn again is stupid.
Put the name in the rafters but who cares if someone else wears an arbitrary number.

re: Comixzone (quoting isn't working right now), I'd think both would mess up any organization. I don't think you should overpay for any of them. It really depends what percentage over the value you overpay each, though when it comes to real dollar amounts when you start to get into the millions you become a liability.

This guy just ran an NHL 22 simulation with Huberdeau on the top line and we end up missing the playoffs with a 32-52-8 record for 30th in the league.
Lindholm and Huberdeau dropped to 59 points lol
