Too bad they can't bank it for the next work stoppage, or dump it all in the pension plan.

To be 100% honest I’d rather the cap hardly go up to screw the Oilers and Leafs.
Feels like a get out of jail card for them.
Not a big deal for us since we hardly have anyone to pay lol.

To expand on my thought, the Flames seem to always have cap space at the worst time to optimize it. Last rebuild there were the compliance buyouts and now the cap is on roids, after seasons of teams paying 1st round picks to dump 6m for a year....

The Pens Athletic writer says Marcus Petterson is the most likely to go, and also suggest Letang going somewhere isn't out of the realm of possiblity, despite his contract, age, and play. Jarry, Graves, and Karlsson are close to untradeable, and Rust has a NMC. He also states Rakell is likely to go.

Clear as day to get out of the worst contract in the NHL by acquiring other bad contracts with shorter term and able to buyout when the team is in a spot to compete. Surprised this needs to be explained to you?

Show me one bad contract they had in the past 8 years.

Because they sign players who aren’t “home grown” during free agency all the time.

You think someone wants Huberdeau for 10.5M and playing at a 40 point pace ?

The current GM is an idiot, but I don’t know if any team in the NHL has a more proven track record of ripping it down to the studs and building up another contender. They are the poster child for how to do it right. I’m not sure if I trust the flames to ever do that kind of rebuild, but can you imagine having players like Crosby and Malkin at the same time? Or Lemiex and Jagr? And actually keeping them their whole productive careers? Hardly anyone mentions the shamful tanks that preceded those teams.
Regarding Raz, I’m surprised that the “we think we’re going to re-sign him” leaks from Conroy haven’t started yet.
If Cozens is the offer, that’s a hard pass. Helenius and a 1st? That’s more like it.

You aren’t getting Helenius and a 1st for Andersson. Wish we could, but that isn’t happening.

No need to settle for Cozens though, surely there are better offers than that out there.

Really?
- top pairing defender
- amazing value contract, we could make even better
- good guy in the room, captain material
- doesn’t miss many games
Buffalo can’t be a perpetual rebuild team. There has to be pressure, and their cupboards are overflowing.
Gotta spend some of that capital.

I actually think the Sabres are a good trade partner for us and I would be happy to acquire Cozens. I think he has a ton of upside and being he has had a bit of a regression, and his contract, his acquisition price will drop. I think it would be a great pickup.

Trading Andersson is not a buy low on Cozens. It’s absolute robbbery by Buffalo. They get the clear cut best player a better contract and shed a boat anchor.
I’d much rather take the 1st and prospect. If they seriously want to get rid of Cozens they can attach another pick and we will take him.

Helenius = mid first
2025 or 2026 1st = a mid first, probably
For 1.75 seasons of peak Raz? That doesn’t seem that outlandish.

Super interesting take here.
Connor Zary, 23, career high 34 pts, everyone would be happy with a long term $6-7MM deal.
Dylan Cozens, 23, career high 68 pts (31 goals), signed long term for $7.1MM
I have watched both players play a lot…… you take Dylan Cozens every single day of the week, and it isn’t close.

Ya trading a dman who has 4 fewer points than an alleged top 6 center since the start of the 23/24 season and having the top 6 center make 2.6 million more for this season and next season and then having that center for another 4 years is definitely not buying low. Rasmus could well end up with more points than Cozens by the end of this season.
The Flames already have a better cheaper top 6 center in Kadri and folks want to get rid of him.

We are not talking about Cozens for Zary. You said you take Cozens for Andersson as a buy low.
Andersson is by far the better player and it’s not close. Not only that the massive contract Conzens comes with.
Also Zary has just started his career and is showing some significant progress while Cozens is showing some serious regression.
Honestly when we played Buffalo I had to check the stat sheet to see if Cozens even played.
