What a disaster that would have been. Yeah, I was always sour on Nieuwendyk because of that. He was the original Yashin. It’s as good example how arbitration can kill the relationship between a player and the team though. The Flames won the arbitration and I can’t help but wonder what was said.
I was surprised to actually see Nieuendyk involved in the alumni game a few years ago though, so water under the bridge now I guess.

Huberdeau trains in Calgary in the summer. Calgary was on his list of teams he would play for....
My friend is a huge Calgary fan. He says Huberdeau is there every summer training. Why would you train in a city that you don't like? He's also Canadian, so unless Montreal can clear massive cap space he's probably re-signing with Calgary.

A poster said early in this thread that Huberdeau does spend a lot of time here in the summer. Would be nice if there were more posters who can confirm that.

If he signs I hope we get the lower AVV associated with the longest contract possible, despite the later year risk/downside (assuming a discount is given for a longer contract).
Window is open, get the AVV down a little bit to make room for more talent now.
If you don't go that direction, then don't bother signing him and go for trade/ picks. But I want to go for win now.
I think some posters are gunshy of going for winning now as it seems more calculated and "better" to sell for picks and get "all" the future talent, making a cup more likely, or closer to a guarantee in their view. It is also "scary" to go for it now instead of saying our window is in the future. But that is the thing, the cup is never easy to get. Its a crap shoot and its always scary to go for it - that is the reason sports are fun. Not to mention the counter-intuitive view that the fans should pay the team to put an on-ice product that isn't worth watching.
We have a legitimate window now, maximize it.

I have a feeling Huberdeau will sign, but if he won't sign this summer then he needs to be flipped this summer to a team he will sign with.
If they let the season start IMO the team will be good enough that they won't be sellers at the deadline.
Same goes for Weegar.
Extend them or trade them this summer.

Yup, need to go for it. The nucleus of our team is at the right age.

Stolen from Reddit, but if we trade him I hear the asking price for Hub is a "top forward,” a “premium prospect,” and a first-round pick"

Which would make sense. The nice thing is Jonathan H is motivated to cash in now after amazing season.

Sorry.. this was a joke.
Like, Tkachuk gave us a good return.
We then get Hub and given he is pretty much in the exact same situation (even with his NMC we need him to list teams he would extend with) - we increase our gains. Using one player - the circle continues.
Exponential growth joke about return on assets.

He has an 8 team no go list which Tre would already have.

It’s been his life for a long time.
From a professional point of view, I imagine leaving a President’s Trophy for a team that has been in disarray for the past couple of months is a great sell either. Not to mention, he is already relatively under paid and now will pay more taxes. Honestly, he is probably pretty pissed off right now and I can’t say I blame him.

To add context to Huberdeau's disappointment and attachment to Florida...
He has said many times in interviews that his family often traveled down to Florida in the winter for long stretches of time, and that he would regularly attend Panthers games in the 90's.
He's sort of a childhood fan of the team. It probably broke his heart to hear he wasn't going to sign a retirement contract there.
However, he's a high character guy and a leader. I think he'll find a way to be happy in Calgary, especially if he's accepted and adored by the fans. Always seemed to be in it to please a fanbase.

Dont want to read too much into it but if he was pulling a Lindros I don't think he would have instantly changed his IG pic

Yeah if he signs an extension, the fans here will love him similar to how they loved Gaudreau or Chucky. We have some real passionate fans.

If you want to compare this to historical Flames trades, I would like to suggest the Phaneuf trade should have gotten a similar return to this rather than the hodge podge of players Sutter got.

Yeah, he definitely does and who can blame him.
Behind closed doors Tre has had an opportunity to vent and let his true feelings out.
Such a tough business especially for a GM who can get close to his players and a tight knit group as so many people have referred to with this team.
At some point, Tre and all of us who are diehard fans of our Calgary Flames will forget and move on.
Such an apt saying, “Cheer for the crest on the front on not the name on the back”.

This is a pretty great trade for the Flames for the upcoming season at least.
I didn't see how the Flames could have re-signed Gaudreau/Tkachuk without taking a decent step back depth wise.
Now they have replaced Gaudreau, have money to sign Mangiapane, and have seemingly substantially improved their D-core from last season.
The forwards won't be as strong as last season, but they may have the money to upgrade as the season goes along.
Be interesting to see if Weegar and Huberdeau get re-signed before the season starts. If the Flames are in a race for the division at the trade deadline with those guys unsigned it would be a tough decision to trade them at that point.
