Politeness is at an all time low, for sure. I still wave every time but damn if that wasn't a bit jarring.

The rudeness has definitely increased. About a week ago, I made a lane change (signaled, shoulder checked, tons of room, and I was going full speed). The dude in the truck who was at least 4/5 car lengths behind me hammered the gas, pulled up beside me, and gave me that "WTF are you doing?!" look. Like I shouldn't change lanes into his lane? It was so ridiculous.

Full disclosure, being Sunnyside residents means the construction is 100% to our benefit, but my god it's a disaster right now. The people that put up with that mess every day are saints.
|
The construction doesn’t bother me, but the way drivers handle the construction is definitely annoying. It wouldn’t even be that bad if people would just drive properly.
I have to admit sometimes I am a dumb dumb that merges early because there is a big gap right beside me and I just can’t be bothered to wait to the end at risk of someone not letting me in. But if someone behind me passes me and just so happens to end up at the end of their lane in a scenario where I’m the one who has to let them in? Then in they go, no trouble.
That seems to be the other side of it. People merge early and then think everyone behind them has to merge somewhere behind them. If you merge early you’re now in the lane that accepts the mergers at the end of the lane, regardless of where in the “line” they were before you merged.

See, you’ll get the hang of being a grumbling middle-aged man. You just gotta ease into it

I won't merge early but I've definitely been in the lane that continues on and in that case I'm not one of those that leaves the lane to drive to the end and merge back in. While I generally let people in, I do on occasion try to coax them to the end of the lane before letting them in. You know, instead of a full stop 20 cars from the end, I'll roll half way behind them so they keep moving forward until their lane ends. Kind of like holding your kids hand through something to show them how it's done.

Ha! I experience this one quite a bit, living by a dogpark we head out there sometimes 3 or 4 times a day. I don't go out of my way to greet everyone but when passing by in close proximity I'll give a cheerful "hello!".
Once in a while it's a socially awkward mutant who silently walks by (with no headphones on), for fun I've started giving them an audible "aaaaalright", half dejected and half annoyed. It's fun.

It has been a source of mild pleasure for me watching PepsiFree age. He used to get to make fun of us for being old all the time, but nine years later that gap has closed considerably.
He'll be out there fertilizing and watering his lawn before you know it.

I do the same. Or a smart-assed "Good, and you?"
I've definitely cut back on that sort of thing though, now realizing just how many people just have crippling social anxiety, and nearly have a panic attack when strangers talk to them

The same reason you aren't greeting everyone walking downtown is the same reason they aren't greeting you on a quiet residential street.

People who don’t know how to spoiler tag large images gmg. Yeah way to go boomer you just screwed the formatting for everyone for the next page of the thread. That’s why the pro move is to keep your settings at 20 posts per page because Darryl can’t type SPOILER in brackets.

Nah, it’s different. The lower the people density the higher the expectation of acknowledgement. I don’t know why that’s the case, but it’s a pretty universal thing. Probably something innate.

No need to chat, just do the universal head nod. Every guy knows it, there's no excuse.

Guys please don’t draw attention to this. It already seems like I can feel myself literally becoming dust without the “one of us, one of us” stuff.
I’m delicate.

What's the best stuff to add to winter washer fluid to keep it from freezing and not damaging any internals? Vodka/Everclear? Isopropyl? Hoping to make sure what I add to the fluid doesn't mess up any plastics, rubber or body paint if it gets on stuff other than the windshield.
The winter stuff I got from Costco sucked. Like it has been freezing near immediately and clogging up my wipers like super chilled water. The stuff I bought didn't do that in previous years. Must be a bad batch. I got some reflex brand stuff rated to -49C in the meanwhile and it was exactly what I expected this morning when it cleared out the light frost and evaporated cleanly.

Yeah I really wonder if it was a bad batch or something, I've never had "winter" fluid freeze
