Within the city the roads are fine, outside the city they are terrible.

The Highway from Chestermere to about 84th street are some of the worst conditions I have ever driven on.

Good thing I'm staying in the city!

Even the residential/side roads were fine here.

the roads are fine, at least in the city. The snow is too wet to be blowing due to the wind a whole lot. Dry snow with this wind, and it'd be a whiteout out there.

I was going to go in to the university for an hour for this volunteer project I'm working on (where they really don't need me anyway) and I sent out a "well I'm in the country and the roads are pretty terrible so I'll probably sit today out" email.

Instead of some understanding like a "probably a good call, no sense risking your life over something you can do from home" I got a "oh...ok... well maybe you can come in tomorrow instead? seeing as you couldn't make it today?"

IDK, maybe I'm reading too much into it but TBQH I didn't want to do your stupid project in the first place and now I really don't want to do it. It's not even that bad, but it has brought out some emotions that were simmering under the surface.

/endrant (or whatever that was)

Yeah this morning right on top of that first hill when you leave Chestermere it was extremely bad.

Coming back was better though, by then the road had melted most of it.

Thankfully I stayed off of the #1 this morning and went on the #1A, which was a little better.

The power went off this morning while I was in the shower (5:30) in Coventry Hills. It's still off. I've heard rumors of a pole going down near Centre Street and Beddington. Anyone confirm?

When I phoned the Enmax trouble line earlier this morning, they mentioned two neighborhoods without power and expected service to resume within 2 hours (the message was recorded at 7:00 am). I called back at 10:45 and the message had changed to "We're experiencing power outages in our service area." Not helpful but I suppose it's easier than reciting two dozen neighborhoods.

It's a beautiful spring day out here in Drum ... birds are singing, broken high cloud cover, blossoms are popping out. Just kidding. It's not too bad here though. Wind and rain, but no snow or power outages.

Power went out southwest of the city at about 1 a.m. . . . . . so now about 12 hours at my house without power.

Fairly widespread. Urban areas doing a lot better than rural areas for restoration.

WTF?

I'm here in DC complaining that after a couple of weeks of 85 degree weather it went back down to the 60's and 70s. And then I see this!

I miss the Flames, miss lots of things about being in Canada, but I sure as hell don't miss snow in May!

So are we out of the woods yet? Or is it going to start slushing again?

I was supposed to drive to Jasper for a conference for work today and come back tomorrow... so I decided to go the long way through Red Deer to avoid the smaller roads.

When I was on the QE North just after Airdrie, there was a back up from everyone trying to get on to the exit ramp and turn around. I didnt understand why, as the roads were perfectly fine up til then- a little wet maybe.

After the overpass it was like a wall of weather or something. Slush had been carved into ruts and frozen solid by the wind, dozens of cars were in the ditch including 4x4 trucks, police and tow trucks were everywhere, visibility was horrible... I reduced my speed to about 30kms and turned around as soon as possible.

It was nerve racking.

About 20,000 in Lethbridge without power right now, or within the last hour. Tough to estimate.
