A bunch have been put in the main group and given time.

Remember Grossman getting a deal and lit up by Edmonton.

Look at the way the groups have been constructed the last few years. I'm all for having your NHL group together so you are reafy to go but that's primarily the vets you can still sprinkle in prospects and give them minutes in a game.

The only player who really got a shot was Ruzicka.

Why? There is no reason to believe he'll have trouble getting a 2-way contract next year, which would just be the inverse of the Flames offer. Time value of money makes this deal smrter

Yup, I remember Tanner Glass looked good against pre-season scrubs and had a cup of coffee with the big team. That was about it.

We also signed Rinaldo, Reider, Grossman and I think Murray unless I'm mistaken and he played before for us.

We signed Versteeg from the Oilers after a PTO.

But that wasn't what I was trying to get at is who we signed it's limiting the opportunity by having them around and taking ice time away.

The list would be just as long of young prospects that didn’t amount to anything that were churned through the team if we didn’t sign those guys as UFA.

Here is one of the quotes for the folks that commented on my post about people being glad he is gone, read through the thread and there are many more similar type of posts.

“I was a huge (Alex) Ovechkin fan,” Phillips said. “I wore No. 8 for Ovechkin. That was my number, all the way until I hit junior. I actually have an old Caps jersey, but it doesn’t fit me anymore.”

“I’d be lying if I said that it was an easy thing to turn the page here,” said Phillips, who racked up 236 points across his five winters with the Flames’ farm club and was rewarded with a grand total of three appearances in The Show. “I’ve loved playing in Calgary this whole season for the Wranglers and all my time here, doing different camps and my time with the Flames. It was definitely not an easy thing to land on. But at the end of the day, I just thought this was a good opportunity. It seems like a good fit for me.”

“I’ve said this before — that’s my goal every summer and going into every training camp is to make the NHL team and to play in the NHL,” reiterated Phillips, who averaged upwards of a point-per-game in his past two minor-league campaigns. “I feel like hopefully I have a decent chance to achieve that in Washington. By no means is it something that is going to be handed to me. It’s something I have to work for. You have to beat guys out of jobs. But I’m excited for that challenge.”

I'm just surprised that he outgrew a jersey.

I'm salty I never got to see Phillips play. Went to the Wranglers in December just after he was called up and then saw the Flames couple days later where he sat in the press box.

Can't really speak on the player but this does speak to general bad asset management from the Flames. Maybe he isn't an NHLer but needed more time to prove it. Am reminded of my high school football tryouts when told if the coaches were deciding between a Senior and Junior, they'd pick the younger player every time because they had more potential. If a crappy high school coach can figure this out why can't the Flames?

Hopefully Conroy can reverse the trend of prioritising veteran intangibles over youth.

Some , if not most, young and smaller late drafted players do not have the talent nor size to play in the NHL. The AHL is many miles from the NHL.

Prioritizing veterans over unqualified youth (25 yrs old) has little to nothing to do with overcoming these deficits.

Theoren Fleury type players are one or two in a generation.

Phillips hasn’t got the tools nor physical capabilities to be a top 9 forward, nor the upside.

Unfortunate, but that’s the way the cookie crumbles.

I’m just glad Conroy has seemingly stopped the trend of counting the younger players out before they’ve even put the first name on the camp roster. Under Sutter especially, the tie went to the older player, and other times even had the battle compensated in the older player’s favor. One mistake and the youngster is cut… one mistake and the vet gets another chance. Tough to win in those circumstances.

The Caps clearly disagree, or they wouldn't have signed him.

Perhaps, however the argument I presented was directly correlated to the Flames/Phillips case.

Phillips will score 5 pts in 5 games to start the season. This place will be in absolute uproar. By November he will be waived to the minors and go unclaimed.

I do not mind him being gone, Flames are already a small team next season. The only thing I wish is that Flames would have given him more opportunities at the NHL level, but that was hard to do when Sutter did not even want him getting called up. Ya he never really stole the spot at camp, but his last season should have resulted in more opportunity.
