I'm a fan of locking up prime aged bottom 6 forwards and bottom 3 defense to long term deals, then rotating through the DeBrincats, Tarasenkos, John Klingbergs, and Perrys of the world. You can tell within 10 games if people bring it or not. Duehr has that. I like Pelletier, he has enthusiasm for miles. I think he has top 6 potential too.

Same with goalies, just give them a shot at it and don't pay top dollar.

If you use that strategy, you'll never be in cap jail and every deadline and summer you have options.

If you draft an Iginla or Theo Fleury, then pay them aggressively. But enough of giving 30-year olds retirement deals.

Especially when you can keep the AAV <1.5M, there is minimal risk if you have to bury them in the minors.

Just to push back a little. Guys like Bouma, Ferland, and Jooris used to play with a ton of energy as well. Then this style catches up to them. Their bodies wear out, and they start picking their spots, or end up on LTIR.

Also if you have the bottom of the roster filled with long term contracts it becomes much harder to give prospects the opportunity.

Agree with this. Its rare that these guys can go like mad once they are locked up long term. Hathaway may be an exception since he's gotten a few longer deals as a 4th line guy. But I'd want to cycle through these guys on 1 year deals so they have to play with their pants on fire to get another new contract.

Wait, what?

Did Conny have some Kyit up his sleeve this whole time? Is this the the young player he needed cap room for?

Craig Conroy, you are one hell of a beautiful man.
