Not that it matters much because it's a game but Huberdeau-Kadri-Toffoli have a +5 rating in NHL 23 so it's the line I always use.

Some observations from the season so far.
The top line is ineffective because they are not getting the puck to Huberdeau and because Lindholm is playing with his head in his hockey pants. All too often the one player with the most touches on a rush is Tyler Toffoli, who is not a great puck handler nor a good skater. He's a finisher, but not the guy you want handling the puck. Get the luck to Huberdeau and let him do his thing. Lindholm has to step up and get it together. He's the worst player on his line by a big margin.
Trevor Lewis needs to go away. He's a fine 13th forward, but he is killing the third line. He handles the puck like a its a live grenade and never seems to make a crisp pass. This is the line where Toffoli should be lining up. He plays the same north-south game as Backlund and Coleman and would likely benefit from their style of game. Coleman needs to get his damn stick under control and start playing some smart hockey. I think his struggles are directly linked to Lewis and his inability to play with any flow. Coleman looks frustrated and I think it's because that line is missing a player that can do something other than bump along the boards and get in the way.
The second line has so much potential to be killer. Mangiapane is struggling and not playing his best right now, but it is still the best line on the team. Kadri and Dube have some serious chemistry. Don't mess with this mix, let Mangiapane get rolling and profit.
Defense has been really good. Zadorov continues to surprise with his play. Not the weakness I think some would believe he was going to be. Weegar is finding his way and needs a little bit of time, but the blueline looks great.
Markstrom is concerning. He's giving up softies and making bad decisions when leaving his crease. Frankly, he should never leave his crease. He is such a poor puck handler that there is no benefit from him wandering around. He's not Mike Smith dumb, but he should not be taking chances when he can't handle the puck worth a damn. Focus on stopping pucks and leave the dump in retrieval to the defensemen. He needs to get his head right and build some confidence.
Biggest take away is this team needs another RW with some skill to play on the top line. If you have to give Matthew Phillips a shot because of the cap, make it happen. It is painful to watch the top line continue to struggle at generating any offense 5-on-5.

I change the starting goalie and nothing else - BUT - keep sniffing around for a top line RW, move Noah as required. Shop the number one goalie or Noah for high draft picks, build the team around a solid base San Jose style. Go with Vladar, bring up Wolf, run with it, all we have to do is make the playoffs, where we slot in makes no difference.

Yup.
Look as the Oilers as an example. Was Yamamoto “ready” three years ago when they have him a shot, nope he was being outperformed by Phillips in the AHL back then.
But it helped the slotting with their lines and he found chemistry with Draisaitl so it worked. He’s not a star now but he’s a serviceable top 9 winger that provides some offence.
Flames need to do the same thing with one of Phillips or Pelletier right now, give them a look and see what you’ve got. It’s why training camp was so frustrating to not even give them a look with top 9 forwards.
Flames seem to expect these guys to come in and instantly be difference makers, or standout in preseason without actually giving them NHL linemates or NHL minutes to adapt to NHL pace and play.

Shooting 40 shots and winning the shot battle doesn’t mean much.

High danger chances were 14-7 Calgary five on five.
It's not just volume.

The Flames actually played a good team game again. The first line wasn't hot, but everything else was firing. Until that second goal it looked like they were cruising on their way to a solid win despite the Oilers having been gifted some penalties earlier in the game. Had Markstrom not had that mistake they were very likely going to finish with the win and a renewed sense of confidence in Markstrom against the Oilers. Too bad it didn't go that way.

Hyman really seems to have the Flames number. It's hard to beat the Oilers when you only get two goals against them. Treliving likely knows he needs one more scorer, but he's really going to have to work to get one and be able to fit one in.

This is what I was thinking last night, just stated a little more matter of factly . When he plays it, it rarely clears the zone and ends up in a scramble or board battle. You give up possession for a 50/50 chance of possession. Keep the puck behind the net, give to your D.
And this was my complaint for Rittich, Talbot, Smith etc. It's a bad play. Almost always.

Markstrom is no Mike Smith but his entire career has moments of misplaying the puck. He cuts it out we win. His game is coming together but damn, wish he could've gotten over that Edmonton hump last night, he needed it mentally.
Lindholm needs to get going

Markstrom really has to stop being included in the reasons the Flames lost to the Oilers. He's being paid to win these games, and he's not doing it.

An own goal off of a diving Hanifin’s stick, plus a deflection off of his skate where he wasn’t even facing the blind pass.
Then from a statistical probability standpoint, I wish the BoA was 8 games this year, just to see how he may continue with this ‘having their number’ thing.

Markstrom now has a .903 save Percentage on the year. It sure looks like we are getting year 1 Markstrom and not year 2 Markstrom.
Flames deserved to win and lost, it happens. I do think people underestimate how deflating a bad goal is, especially a bad goal that ties a game in the third period.

What about when Smith let in a goal from the Flames blueline in game 4 though? The Oilers could have deflated but they didn't. That one was way worse in a more important game.
The Flames had plenty of time to rebound but couldn't generate anything. Then the Oilers got a fluke one to take the lead.

Markstrom was having a great game until he wandered out of the net with McDavid on the ice. Not smart and ended up being the turning point in the game. I don't consider it a soft goal because he was late getting back into the net and got beat. More of a really dumb move that cost the team. Outside of that his play was encouraging as he didn't look terrible against the Oilers. Flames just weren't opportunistic enough on the night as they should have had a larger lead going into the 3rd period but that's the way it goes at times in an 82 game season.
