Are we lucky or is this what a virus does in order to survive and infect more hosts?
Or maybe someone engineering it to do this.

If there was a shortage of officials, it makes you wonder how exactly the NHL is going to deal with games, as many NHL officials were testing positive as well.

I have no real info on who had fault. Except if Spector says A I think it’s B.

Why does it have to be someone's fault? Omnicron is taking over, something that wasn't factored in, in even after teams had actually arrived, never mind the planning stage.
And this tournament, thanks to TSN going it by a factor of 10000000%, according to a series of threads by Gord Miller earlier in the week, basically brings in enough revenue for the year for the IIHF to stage all the other IIHF tournaments in the year, including the women's tournament.
Money talks, so getting this one in, makes sense given how other tournaments (hockey and otherwise) were staged this past year. But the Omnicron clearly can bust through quarantines, even though it's affect on people's respitory systems equate to a cold for 90% of the population.

For sure.
And if they're out there questioning the silly decisions before they don't work out than I'm all for it.
But if it's crickets before and outrage after it gets very very old quickly.

Omicron was already rampant in Europe in mid-November. At every stage of the pandemic, surges in Europe have been followed by surges in Canada 3-4 weeks later. Every time.
I don’t understand how this is a surprise to so many Canadians. It’s maybe understandable in the general public, whose internet seems to stop at the mid-Atlantic. But it’s inexcusable for authorities and planners. They have a window into Covid future just by checking into what’s happening in Germany, the UK, and the Netherlands. What they do with that information is a matter of judgement and balancing tradeoffs. But nobody in Canada who has been paying the least attention to Covid globally should have been surprised by Omicron.
|
So you're suggesting the IIHF four weeks before exhibition games are to start should have just canceled their annual money maker in Canada without the case load based on the idea that this wave would behave like the last few have?
Imagine if they did that and it didn't come into Canada.
Don't get me wrong, I'm with you in thinking this could get tense. But it's a big difference between thinking this could go bad and making a multi million dollar decision to quickly shift to a bubble or cancel the whole thing and then be wrong.

Are there no other referees in Alberta?
I’ve seen a few.

Come on. You know it's more complex than parachuting in some random refs.

I’m saying the prospect of the host city being in the midst of a major covid upsurge during the tournament wasn’t evident only in hindsight - it was the most likely scenario. Whatever other considerations the organizers had to grapple with, surprise shouldn’t have been one of them.

Right but I'm not arguing the potential for Omnicrom to come to Canada, but the questioning of all decision makers all the time with hindsight. It gets old.
The players arrived here on December 15th. The Flames first canceled game was December 13th.
Just saying this wasn't all that simple.

I agree a lot of the reactions are way over the top, but it is definitely fair to question whether this was planned appropriately for a 'normal Covid' scenario.
Using Red Deer added a lot of unnecessary variables. Even if you don't want to use Northlands for some reason, there is still the U of A arena (not sure if there are any others that seat thousands?)
To be fair, the tournament seems to have gone off without (m)any issues last year in Czechia using two towns about 40 mins apart...I wonder how this year's protocols compared.

My understanding is the protocols were the same but the big difference was a soft v hard bubble

5 more positive players from yesterday's tests from 5 different teams. Would have been a bunch of forfeits today if it went on.

Hmm... strategy idea for teams that aren't very good. Take only players who've recently recovered from covid and hope everyone else has to forfeit!

Like Adam Silver said a couple weeks ago, covid is never going away. Makes no sense to continue shutting sports/businesses down. Gotta learn to live with it. I have read of very few, if any players who've suffered severe symptoms this season unlike last season. Seems everyone is either asymptomatic or experiencing incredibly minor symptoms.
My sister and dad are both currently positive for covid and they're basically just normal healthy people being forced to stay inside, despite the vaccinations clearly working for them.
Just stop testing asymptomatic players across all leagues.
|
How are we two years into this thing and people still can't understand the concept of "Just because symptoms are mild for you, doesn't mean they'll be mild to the people in the community you could spread it to?"
