The advantage to the home team is giving their players an extra year. It’s seldom getting that year for free.

I never implied that's what a player does, it was quick calculations to show what I as a fan would be happy to see. I'm not excited about Gaudreau at 8+ but 7-7.5 I am. Simple.
And the 8th year is definitely used to bring down AAV. Nuge up in Shelbyville recently as an example. If Gaudreau got 8 million on the open market, 7.5 from Calgary over 8 years pays him an extra 4 million, hardly playing for free, and I highly doubt that a 36-year old Gaudreau gets a $4 million playing year any other way.
