Gotta have long term vision. Get something for Brodie that will contribute for the future, or lose him with nothing to show.

Yes, you have to have long term vision. That means not dealing Brodie for magic beans in a playoff race. Because if you do and we miss you can kiss a guy like Tkachuk goodbye. Do you think he is wanting to play here if the GM sabotages the season? You might as well trade him this offseason.

Some of us really treat this team as if it were NHL20 GM mode style.
Trading Brodie while in the playoff race drops the team’s morale.

We didn’t make the rumour up, we’re just discussing it. Maybe tell that to Treliving.

Except this is not fan made armchair gm stuff.
And the heartstrings card is a little ridiculous lately. Oh we cant trade anyone because the team will be sad. It's a business and they know full well that anything can happen.
And if this roster is that fragile after a trade of a player likely leaving for greener pastures anyways, then it deserves to be shredded up regardless of standings. For a full calendar year now this roster has shown more mental softness than toughness and if we are going to win a championship, that needs to change PDQ.
Man alive.
EDIT: And people want to trade sam bennett....let's get softer! Dudes a frickin trooper for this team. Always has been.

Yes, it's a business so suggesting they increase the risk of foregoing millions of dollars in playoff revenue in exchange for magic beans is pretty far fetched.
And before someone brings up the Glencross trade, as they normally do; he had completely fallen off by the time he was dealt, so his loss wasn't remotely comparable to dealing a top pair defenseman.

I don’t really agree with calling draft capital “magic beans”.
If you don’t want to sacrifice today for tomorrow, I totally understand. But accumulating draft picks is a pretty established strategy for building a good team.

What do you call the strategy of shedding draft picks to aquire mediocre talent and older UFAs at the deadline?
Asking for a friend.

Man, after watching the Leafs right now if I were Dubas I'd be on the phone to whatever team has D men and asking the price and saying okay done call it in.
Things looks twice as worse for the Leafs as they do the Flames.

No kidding.
It's funny because reading around this place you'd think the Flames had some problems, but we don't know the half of it, lol.

Right because letting Broadie walk after seasons end and getting absolutely nothing is going to lock in Tkchuk to signing long term that much more.

Absolutely. Players want a chance to win. As a young star are you going to want to stay on a team that throws away the chance to compete in the playoffs for a couple of draft picks? I can tell you right now you send that message to your team and your star players are saying get me the F out of here. Good luck attracting free agents as well. It is bad for business any way you look at it.

Late first round draft picks are magic beans because you have no idea what you will get. Outside of the top 15 the odds of getting an impact player go down drastically.

That’s one way to look at it.
Except that picks can be traded. And some teams are better at drafting and are more successful at developing picks into productive players. It’s not magic or dumb luck.
And since you cited odds, you have to admit your odds improve with more picks.
What seems like magical thinking to me is believing this team can somehow turn itself into a championship contender without some transformative changes.

After watching that game the offense looked equally as bad as the defense.
Adding a Dman doesn't change the fact that they were only able to get 7 shots on a zamboni driver in the third period.
