Maybe I'm overthinking things (or don't know how Twitter works) but coming out with that public apology for all of twitter to see, and then ignoring all the comments and just going back to business as usual with their most recent tweets being about holiday skate, just adds to the apology being hollow to me.
"We didn't know, but we're sorry, but to be clear we didn't know. Now who wants to watch us sock a few dingers?"
The Following User Says Thank You to Oling_Roachinen For This Useful Post:
Keep trashing Trudeau if you want to. He's a racist and he deserves it. Anyone downplaying these facts are simply just feeling guilty they threw support behind him.
As Roachinen says, the duration should work against the racist. Trudeau had 20 years to come clean, and the only reason he did, was TIME magazine running the photos.
I'll say it again, blackface is racist and deplorable no matter the context.
Actions speak louder than words. The reason why Trudeau doesn't get flack after the apology is because of his actions since these incidents. Did he come clean? No. But did he invest $45MM into anti racism, added far right groups to terrorist lists, apologized to natives for residential schools, recognized international african day, cringe-ly tries to pander to other races... It's not that hard to understand. I don't even like Trudeau and I can tell he's not racist NOW (at least in a way that harms others).
What does bringing up Trudeau even have to do with racism in Hockey? If anything it proves that people (Trudeau) can grow from it and if you can't demonstrate this growth then well you are kinda of #### out of luck.

If you are suggesting that people who dress in blackface should express remorse, I agree. Society should give them another shot even.
How can anyone demonstrate growth when the pikes are out and firing is the only option (obviously the PM can't be fired)?
We need to apply the same standard of zero tolerance to everyone or give everyone a chance to change, imo.
But everybody on the team was there? They all knew about it all this time and did nothing?
Shouldn't it be more than just him in hot water?
Peer pressure, bystander effect, no skin off their nose because they're not the ones being made fun of, fear of being ostracized for not going along with the joke, etc
I've got a few anecdotes from growing up in a majority white town
I agree 100%. As long as its kept in a means of moving forward and not as a means of revenge
Why not both? Or just revenge? This was a vile and terrible thing done with intent to make Aliu feel singled out and to make a “joke” at the expense of his race in a very personal way.
If Aliu wants to use his new platform to get revenge against everyone who did #### like this to him then more power to him. I don’t think it matters even a little bit if he’s outing people and it’s not part of “moving forward.” If he’s been sitting on stuff and never had the chance to get retribution and now he can, good for him. (That said, using his platform to tell the rest of us who the racists are is hopefully always going to be considered by the majority as forward progress).

I'm suggesting more than demonstrate remorse there needs to be demonstrable action. In these cases these guys have had 20 or so years to change. The problem is if you can't prove it you are kind of SOL because it is now in the best interest of a private company to fire you. I can't know for sure but if Peters had a history of going to Africa to build houses or some sort of charity work with people of African heritage then I think Treliving stands beside him.
I just don't think bringing up Trudeau adds anything to these conversations because it detracts from issues being discussed.

EDIT: Never mind. Typed out long, sanctimonious reply that just repeats the same arguments I've made in several other threads this month. Not worth it. Not taking the bait again.

Okay, I admit. I enjoyed this post. It is a strange kind of poetry.

This whole Trudeau thing is getting tiresome. He got outed for a stupid thing that he did, but does anyone on here REALLY believe he is racist, or just merely an idiot?
Fine, if you want to equate the Trudeau blackface(s) incident as exactly the same as what Aliu faced - fine. That's up to you to and you are entitled to your opinion. However, I have a hard time believing that Trudeau is a racist given the fact that since he has become the leader of Canada, he has gone to great lengths in trying to bring unity and equality in this nation to all races, ethnic groups, minorities and genders. He has done more - some even say he goes too far - in trying to bring equality and even right the wrongs of the past when it comes to the indigenous communities.
So, for myself, I can be disgusted by Trudeau's blackface incidents, but I am also of the mindset that I will also look at the whole picture here as well. My own logic tells me that Trudeau is both an idiot, but a person that at least seems to mean well and believe in doing good. That's why I personally can somewhat overlook his past transgressions, because he seems to actually be a person that really believes in equality. Bringing up Trudeau and trying to crucify him for his past stupidity is becoming an annoying meme now as people just seem to gloss over what his other actions were. And no, I didn't vote liberal, but it will be a cold day in hell before I vote conservative again in light of what those corrupt ####ers have done to Alberta since Klein left office - and I was a staunch conservative most of my life if anyone cares.
I have no idea why people can't seem to see degrees of intent and outcome to certain actions, and deem these to be important. So many of our laws clearly outline differences for the same crimes. Heck, speeding tickets vary wildly given the circumstances and even the time of day.
No, what Trudeau did was unacceptable and I was glad that it got called out. But no, I think he didn't crucified for it because of his actual record and his actions. Stop being a partisan idiot who blindly votes for one party and one party only. Take a look at the whole picture before forming your opinion.
I am glad that hockey is getting cleaned-up. Everyone who was a ####er should get outed. I wouldn't want any of these reprehensible human beings around my kids and 'teaching' them anything at best, or abusing them at worst. I hope this runs deep all the way to the earliest levels of hockey. This needs to be completely eradicated.
So if I read correctly, Trudeau is an idiot, but a “good person”, because his profession allows him the opportunity to, in the ordinary course of business, make decisions that illustrate and advance a set of values.
As a politician, he is of course expected to reflect the values of his constituency, and the position of his party, and operates in public with a ton of visibility. Plus, he has a vested interest in doing things of which people will approve, because at election time, he needs votes. Yes, has done good things, but do not fail to recognize that he is pretty much doing his job. The majority of Canadians I believe have some common fundamental social values and his job is inextricably linked to publically reflecting those values.
The equipment guy, about whom all we know is basically captured in this picture and anecdote, is a “reprehensible human being”.
Both people made a flabbergastingly poor decision.
I suspect that neither person at the time of making their costume decision, would have been considered fully considering the history of blackface and its full set of implications.
Being a son of a politician, and wanting a future in politics, I would expect Trudeau to have some cultural awareness and sensitivity. I have no idea what on earth he was thinking
Not knowing the equipment guy, well.. I have no idea what on earth he was thinking either.
I suppose the best outcome is if the guy declares that he was straight up wrong, has educated himself, apologizes publically, and hopes that this can be used as a teaching moment.
Because if he has been a full time equipment manager, I don’t think he can immediately snap his fingers and drum up a political career.
