Got in an odd twitter argument about his contract yesterday, and in doing so I looked up simple averages.

The 100th ranked forward scored 48 points last year. The 100th ranked forward contract was at $5M.

The beauty of this deal is it pays him just under that for his non decline years without a need for the player to improve to make the contract worthy. If he finds that 55 point range for the six years it's a great deal. 60 points and it's one of Calgary's better contracts.

Getting Giordano, Gaudreau and Monahan done before the McDavid contract, and then Neal and Lindholm done at reasonable rates without clauses is a heck of a run.

This deal is fine even if Lindholm doesn't improve over the next 6 seasons. If he turns into 20 goals 50 point player then it's a great contract.

This is a great deal if Lindholm stays exactly at what he has been with Carolina.

If he progresses, or if any additional offense blooms in his game, then it'll become one of the best contracts in the league.

That's 4.85, leaving only $3.15 which means Hanifin gets bridged, barring some salary dumping or a Brouwer buyout. Even if Treliving can get Rittich and Kulak below $1M, I don't think there's room for a long term contract without losing some more salary elsewhere.
I'd prefer a similarly long term contract with Hanifin, but at least, if we do bridge him for 2 years lets say, then we have Brouwer, Stone and Frolik off the books. On the other hand, Brodie and Hamonic will be looking to get re-signed as well. It's a difficult to foresee how things look down the road though.

I wonder if there is any interest whatsoever in Stone. I know that it's less than ideal moving one of our few RD, but it would be nice to have both the 3.5 off the books and the space for Andersson.

Was thinking about this. But if Lindholm is a better center than Jankowski, then I think I want Jankowski playing the wing.

Ryan does seem like a better option as the 4C.

Er and y are literally the hockey nicknames for like 90 percent of the league I didn’t put a zo on the end of them. Go ahead and collect your likes but I see no problem calling players by their actual on-ice nicknames.

Bridging Hanifin could become very costly for the Flames if he improves like we think he can. I would get Hanifin on a 6 or 7 year deal and buy out Brouwer.

Might be time to dump Brouwer somehow. Because getting everyone locked in is going to be tight at 8 mil in space

My guess is they are moving forward on both models, and if they can get what they want on the longer term deal they'll make room for the dollars by the deadline and just do it.

Could be Stone on a deal, or Brouwer on a buyout.

Both would be justified if they get the term and dollars they want on an important piece.

bah...don't get feisty. It's just cringe worthy. Very Oiler sounding to use the players nicknames. I could call you "jacker" if you want.

I don't think Jankowski gets the same as Bennett - he has only had 1 NHL season. It is in his interest to sign a 1 year deal and count on doing better this year to get a richer multi-year deal. Recent 2 year bridges like Bennett and Ferland had 2+ seasons of NHL games, and they were both below 2M. I say Jankowski is likely 1 year 1.3M approx.
Goalies are probably slightly cheaper too, neither have proven much yet.

I don't think Hanifin will want a long term deal yet - new team, chance to boost production leading into a bigger deal... does he go the route of Jones and Ristolainen who now look like bargains and have to wait longer to cash in, or Trouba, who is poised to get paid?

But back to the subject of Lindholm - Treliving strikes again! What a wizard getting this under the expected 5M and not to be overlooked, no clauses either. Very happy with that deal - it may not sound like much, but the 400K saved on this deal both preserves a touch more cap and sets a precedent for deals going forward

Not necessarily...

Has Janko done enough to double his salary? I'd expect 1.2M.
Rittich for 1M, sure.
Kulak 1M, sure.
Hath for 850 makes sense.
But Quine's 700 will be in the A.

That leaves 4.65. I don't expect Hanifin to get any more than that long term.

I think what we need to do is take a page out of Seinfeld's book and make Lindholm and Hanifin roommates and then make Brouwer their Butler.

He doesnt play for the Calgary Flames anymore so he shouldnt count against the Cap. He is merely a team Butler.

I'm pretty sure if he binges Downton Abbey for a few days he can figure out Butlering. How hard can it be?

These all seem reasonable...no matter how you cut it (even Hanifin on a bridge), it sure looks like BT will shed some salary to leave a little wiggle room.
