Best thing about this Tavares news is that nobody is talking about the Oilers today, which is no doubt driving Oiler fans nuts.

At least keeping Matthews, Nylander & Marner will be harder for them. They do realize there's a salary cap, right?

$14 million is a lot of cabbage to decline.

No worries. Gonna be awesome to see the front running Leafs get screwed by another one of these playoff moments:

The whole thing is whacked.
And weaken the team you're going to play on? He's a UFA. Here's the thing though: losing Tavares should be offset with cap space gain. If the Islanders should have beef with anything, it's the guys who don't go to free agency to give them a chance to spend the money, and their own management for hanging on to him in a year where they didn't even make the playoffs.

Very true although I have no issues with that. The sheer numbers and population for that team and city warrants it. Ratings wise, it makes sense. Even for a public broadcasting station.

Well, for me and most fans, the business side doesn't supercede the enjoyment of the on-ice product and the off-ice stories. It's no fun being tacitly told to get stuffed because leaf fans matter more. It happened all too much in the 90's & early 2000's.

Not sure I would have made the same choice.
You didn’t mention one of the biggest factors, which team will be the most competitive throughout his contract. Leafs have the far younger core and IMO will be more competitive during the entirety of Tavares’ deal.

Frankly, after much of his skill being buried in the lesser New York team, I wouldn't mind seeing a bit more of his coverage. However, like you, I do also fear it will get out of hand.

Don’t think it’s limited to today. With the Matthews and Tavares hype machine out east, no need to continually force feed McDavid down our throats anymore...

TSN just had to rush the graphic designers to celebrate the TMLs signing Tavares...

Spoiler!

If they sign Mathews to an 11 million dollar deal and Marner and Nylander get Draisaitl deals that's $38 million on 4 players.

Right now they're ok with a cap hit of $55 million bucks, if you add Marner's and Nylanders lets say 19 million and Mathews 11, that puts them at $85.

The Leafs are going to have to make some tough decisions and hope they get a lot of help from their prospects.

This is really a 2 or 3 year window starting now for the Leafs.

One small upside to this signing for those of us bothered by it is that it means less ice time for that Kadri.

Congrats to Leaf fans - pretty exciting news for them.

The Leafs are still a long way from the promised land though - Boston really exposed their D in the playoffs and essentially tore them a new one.

Building a better D, with little money to spend, will be interesting to watch.
