Unless, of course, you actually like watching or reading hockey coverage during the offseason. There will be a nonstop barrage of how the leafs are easily the favourite now.
At least keeping Matthews, Nylander & Marner will be harder for them. They do realize there's a salary cap, right?

No worries. Gonna be awesome to see the front running Leafs get screwed by another one of these playoff moments:

If that is true he could have at least given the Islanders the chance to trade him for something.
The whole thing is whacked.
And weaken the team you're going to play on? He's a UFA. Here's the thing though: losing Tavares should be offset with cap space gain. If the Islanders should have beef with anything, it's the guys who don't go to free agency to give them a chance to spend the money, and their own management for hanging on to him in a year where they didn't even make the playoffs.
You’ll get to see them a lot...CBC/Snet will find a way for them to be on both half of the back to back Saturday games.
Very true although I have no issues with that. The sheer numbers and population for that team and city warrants it. Ratings wise, it makes sense. Even for a public broadcasting station.

Well, for me and most fans, the business side doesn't supercede the enjoyment of the on-ice product and the off-ice stories. It's no fun being tacitly told to get stuffed because leaf fans matter more. It happened all too much in the 90's & early 2000's.
That's a lot of $ to pass on to play for your hometown team... And be in the constant spotlight... And not in California...
Not sure I would have made the same choice.
You didn’t mention one of the biggest factors, which team will be the most competitive throughout his contract. Leafs have the far younger core and IMO will be more competitive during the entirety of Tavares’ deal.

Wow the league is not going to like the structure of that contract
The next strike/lockout is going to do away with these type contracts just watch for it
Better than being in our division, but still disgusting.
I know the Leafs will still find a way to to lose so not a big deal. But the media coverage will be horrid.
Frankly, after much of his skill being buried in the lesser New York team, I wouldn't mind seeing a bit more of his coverage. However, like you, I do also fear it will get out of hand.

Best thing about this Tavares news is that nobody is talking about the Oilers today, which is no doubt driving Oiler fans nuts.
Don’t think it’s limited to today. With the Matthews and Tavares hype machine out east, no need to continually force feed McDavid down our throats anymore...

Told the Sharks ended up offering more than $13M per season for Tavares. The Islanders upped their offer from $11M per to $11.25M.
