I actually thought he was the flame's best player that series. Showed he had an extra gear when the going got tough. Glad he's back at a great cost.

Jankowski (.925)-Bennett (Approx 2.75)-Versteeg (1.75)
Lazar (Approx 1)-Stajan (3.5)-Brouwer (4.5)
Bouma (2.2)
Gio (6.75)-Ham1 (5.75)
Brodie (4.65)-Ham2 (3.857)
Kulak (Approx .9)-Andersson (.863)
Smith (4.25)
Gillies (Approx .9)
Raymond Buyout + overages from last year - 1.65
Total 70.47 million.
That means in order to sign anyone other than throwing kids into the mix, Calgary will have 4.5 million left over.
Buying out Stajan would save 1.333 million, or the approximate salary of Jankowski + 400K, and would cost .667 next year. Bouma would save 1.533 million this year and would cost .767 next year. That would cover Lazar + Freddie's contracts.
Just outright burying them in the farm would save 1.8 for the two (900K each as a write off), so a million dollars less in savings, but you wouldn't be penalized 1.4 million next year. If that was the route that was taken, then you would basically just be replacing Stajan and Bouma on the roster with Janko + Lazar at par contracts.
|
Stupid Raymond buyout. I expect they'll add about $2 million in payroll, basically $1 million extra for backup goalie and #5 defenseman. Still room for a forward.
Wouldn't at all be surprised to see Bouma bought out.

This is a one year signing. Kind of an odd assertion talking about it like it's a road block in the big picture.
If someone came into camp and unexpectedly lighted it up, I'm sure there's room to adjust.
If not, his contract is over after next season, which as everyone's been discussing, is one of the big positives of this contract.

Versteeg re-signs in Calgary as per multiple sources (1 year, $1.75M)

Yeah no need for a speedy, 25 goal scorer to help Bennett along. We have a college prospect who has played one NHL game.

Even better, terms of the contract are included in the press release for the first time since Treliving took over.

Again, it is a good value signing. Versteeg was brought in just prior to the start of the regular season because CGY didn't have a skilled winger who could produce at the NHL level. Players developing in the system were not ready or were previously sent out (for various reasons).
So I agree not a roadblock but a stop gap. Meaning vets brought in because internal options are not ready.
Centres like Bennett and Jankowski will need good wingers to play with. Ideally young guys the system developed so they can grow together long term.

I am still blown away that teams don't announce the terms and $ of contracts. The insiders find out within minutes after it is announced.

I'm looking at guys like Bennett and Jankowski and who their wingers will be. Versteeg and Brouwer don't excite me as much as younger guys who CGY developed (obviously).

I don't know about "a good bet to improve", more of a "might improve" situation at the time.

Ok how many forwards is that now? Its a good contract but I think that pretty much means Janko or anybody else mine as well not show up for camp

Nah. Assuming we sign Lazar, Ferland and Bennett, we're at 13.
Your competition would essentially be Bouma, Stajan and Hamilton. Admitted you have to beat 2 of them because prospects don't sit in the pressbox, but it's still not a terribly high bar to cross.

Locks to make the team: Gaudreau, Monahan, Versteeg, Bennett, Frolik, Backlund, Tkachuk, Brouwer, Ferland. That's 9.
Stajan, Lazar are pencilled in. That's 2/3 of the bottom line.
So IMO there's a couple spots open for competition - a sitter and a 4th liner - Janko, Foo, Bouma, Hamilton, Hathaway. IMO Bouma sits and Janko plays. The others are callups, with Poirier, Shinkaruk, Klimchuk and Vey.

Amazing deal, big kudos to Kris for deciding on staying. He easily would have gotten more money and term elsewhere.
