Living and working out here on the West Coast, I listen to TSNVancouver1040 radio quite a bit and the media guys have been pumping Shinky's tires for quite some time now (as in he was a big piece of the "rebuild on the fly"). I think that's the main reason that Canucks fans have the torches and pitchforks out over this trade.

My only concern is how quickly the Canucks gave up on Hunter. I mean I can't see them wanting Grandlund so much that they give up such "quality" to get him.

Crazy speculation warning, did things sour there, were they actively shopping him, because he wanted to be moved, because they wanted to move him? We're only three years out of his draft year, still very early. Really good numbers in the AHL this season.

Super odd trade from a Canucks perspective imo.

Sometimes players with an attitude can be a benefit just have to channel it the right way. The Ducks have a bunch of them we don't like but it seems to be working quite well for them. It's high time the Flames had some Ville Nieminen, Neil Sheehy type players. If anything Calgary lacks players with that certain character that breed leadership and confidence. I think if you weed out those types too much you end up with an overly friendly team that doesn't really fight with an edge.

Well that's just great... Seems like a strange trade to make given the timing, neither team has playoff aspirations why swap prospects at this time, why not wait until the off season.

Has Benning ever actually made a good trade? The latest one was my optimism for continued disappointment.

I'm not at all bothered about giving up Granlund. Shown the odd flash of offensive ability, but despite being given ample centre time and some decent looks, he's not really shown any upside that makes me want to keep him. With Monahan, Bennett, Backlund and Stajan all here for the next 2 years minimum(plus Janko, Shore, Grant and Arnold in the system), I think Granlund was very expendable. I don't see him doing anything with the Canucks, much in the same way Sven hasn't. Even if he turns into a 40 point, 2nd line forward(which is optimistic), I wouldn't be all that bothered.

As for acquiring Shinkaruk, I'm late to the party so didn't witness the drama at the draft when we took Poirier instead of him. I also haven't seen any of his apparent attitude issues. But I do find it interesting that people want Drouin, who has a terrible attitude, yet aren't as happy with Shinkaruk, who seemingly has fewer attitude issues(he's never demanded a trade or sat out playing in the AHL). Yeah, I know, greater upside with Drouin, etc. But even so, he has a lot to prove and will likely get a great chance at training camp next season to make the roster. I'm pretty excited to see how he gets on in the AHL for the rest of the season.

I'm happy with this trade. Even if we end up losing this trade, it's not a killer of loss and I like that Brad has traded an expendable centre for a player in a position we need. Well done on Brad for this, I like it.

I know Hunters parents, both who are amazing people. If the apple falls anywhere close to the tree this kid will be just fine.

On the ice, I hope he is a complete #######. That's what this team lacks.

Corey Pronman's take on the trade:

Quote:
My thoughts on the Calgary-Vancouver deal involving Markus Granlund and Hunter Shinkaruk:

The trade is pretty fair. While Shinkaruk has the sparkle next to his name as a touted player for many years, and being a first round pick, Granlund has arguably been as much if not more impressive as a pro. Shinkaruk has the dynamic skill that makes you dream on big-time upside, but Granlund is no slouch either in terms of skill. He can make plays with the puck and shows good vision, even though he’s not a high-end player in terms of skating.

Granlund also has the positional advantage of being able to play down the middle competently, and has adjusted to the AHL/NHL ranks slightly better than Shinkaruk has. Hunter though can make particular type of elite offensive plays than Granlund can’t ratchet himself up to. Shinkaruk has struggled with the physical nature of the pro level, has shown a lot of inconsistencies in his offensive game, and isn’t as good defensively as Granlund.

Both are players who are impressive in their own rights, but have yet to elevate themselves to a top-tier level. Shinkaruk was at that point as a teenager, but Granlund has probably passed him slightly in terms of total player value.

Shinkaruk has drawn mixed opinions in 1.5 seasons in the AHL. I talk to some people around the AHL and they love him, and think he’s one of the best forward prospects in the minors. Others say “don’t let him near my organization” due to the aforementioned issues in his game. Whatever camp you’re in will determine your overall thoughts on this trade. I used to be a big Shinkaruk fan and in observations this season he's shown me those great flashes, but I have also observed him enough lately to have serious questions about his long-term projection.

I’d grade this deal as a marginal win for Vancouver.

A couple years younger than Granlund & for most of his draft year he was touted to be a top-10 pick. He has the pedigree to snipe some goals but there are plenty of question marks about his attitude.

This was Granlund's year to grab the bull by the horns & though he showed glimpses he has really disappointed at times. Waiver eligibility is a worry on the horizon for him & he needed to cement himself in the NHL lineup. It didn't happen.

I'm not exactly over the moon about this, but I really don't mind the trade. Buys us a bit of time in the prospect pool. He could live up to the early hype – you never know.

Shinkaruk also fell hard. I believe CSS had him ranked in the top 10 at some points in that draft

I'm trying to wrap my mind around this as well.

Surely your highest scorer in the AHL is worth more than an AHL'er that will have to clear waivers if sent down from the NHL next year?

Bob McKenzie @TSNBobMcKenzie
Weisbrod was CGY AGM when Baertschi/Granlund were there and Shinkaruk passed over by CGY to draft Emile Poirier. Weisbrod now VAN AGM.

So maybe next year we trade Poirier for Demko.

From listening to his interview from 1040 he seems like a nice enough guy. Handled himself well. Spoke respectfully and considerately about everyone involved despite the interviewer obviously fishing for any little bit of dirt. They mentioned him being disappointed that the Flames passed him by in his draft year and that he's excited to come play for his home town team that he idolised while growing up.

Doesn't come off as a jerk at all.

Not sure my math is up to date but Granny has surpassed the GP for waiver claim exemption if I am not mistaken. Or is it next year. Either way, the trade does give the Flames another year of waiver freedom too if needed.
