For the Chara comparison brought up, it's a 7M/5 year contract signed when the cap was 70.2M and Chara at age 35.
I'm sure most people are expecting at least 7 as well (probably for 5) and it'll settle somewhere closer to 8. I'd hesitate to give anything more than 4 and play hard ball if it came to the 5th without serious salary compensation.

He's not untradeable, but he's currently worth more to the Flames than he likely is to anyone else

but it's not the "past", it's this season and the last that he's stepped up and become one of the best players in the league, and has several more years ahead of him at that level.
Letting Gio go at this point would be a huge blow to the rebuild and send a horrible message to all our young players. It would set the franchise back several years to lose a true No. 1 defensman.
|
You should look up what "past" means.
You guys all have too much emotion and not enough reading comprehension. I am not saying "trade him right f***ing now". I am just saying it makes no sense to give him 8 for more than 3 years. That is all. Term or money. Not both. Since he is a diminishing asset going forward. Do you think Gio's body won't age?

Just not sure how much credibility your think your opinion holds when you admittedly have not watched him the last two seasons as a fair-weather fan when he's come out as one of the best defenders in the league. It's really pretty simple. He's a late bloomer, and has really only emerged as of recently. He's presently one of the best d-men in the league, and there's no reason to think the next 3-4 years will see a drop off.
As for reading compression, statements like this are a little vague:
Quote:
I am just saying in general I would not give years and money to any 33 year-old. Never pay for the past...
|
9 Million (if that figure is even true) is obviously a starting point, and the dollar amount tends to go down the longer the term. Anyone who's listened to Treliving talk the last year knows he's sensitive to our overall cap situation in a few years. I'm sure that will be taken into account.

Here's a hint, just because someone disagrees with you doesn't mean they are getting all emotional. Don't be so condescending.

Just addressing the threshold for term argument.
In my mind you don't give any player 32 years of age or older a contract longer than 3 years unless the cap hit is appropriately adjusted.

Just to GJG. I don't care if you disagree with me. I just ask that you disagree with what I am actually saying. And for the record, I think Giordano was great last season and should have won the Norris this season, if healthy. Doesn't change my opinion.

Not sure how it's emotional to point out you've admitted you stopped watching this team when the going got tough and are now seemingly making judgements about a player you haven't watched with any regularity recently.
Additionally, you throw out some very vague, generalized statements lacking any specifics and then tell people they're not comprehending what you're saying.
Seems odd.

Shut up already. I just have more important things to do with my life. Doesn't mean I am not interested.

Nah. If I was emotional I would have called you an idiot and said you were derailing an interesting discussion among adults with irrelevant personal attacks. But I didn't do that.
Anyhow, back on topic. I am curious to hear where the palatable number is for this contract. I could live with 3x8 or 5x6 (5 years that is). But I don't see either as bring within the realistic realm. Or am I wrong - is there any chance he would take 3x8?

Classy. The anger really comes through though.
Not sure why you're taking it so personally. You trashed this team left and right a few seasons ago and essentially bragged you were no longer watching in several drive by posts over the last two years.
How is it irrelevant to point out that in those two years you admitted you largely didn't watch, that Gio has stepped up and has (currently) become one of the best d-men in the league - in a discussion pertaining to his worth on his next contract?
You're the only one tossing out insults here telling me to shut up etc. There's no need to be so emotional and vindictive.

Best captain in the league. Pay him....pay that man his money. He'll be lifting the cup over his head in June 2018.

Other than the whole possible distraction aspect, is there any rush to get this done in the off-season?

I am actually surprised it was that 'low'.
You have to remember what the real dollars defencemen are making in the NHL today. Those front-loaded, long-term contracts with the extra years tacked onto the end to bring the average down are a thing of the past. It is useless to compare Gio's average to the averages of Weber, Suter, Keith, etc.
You have to compare their actual salaries now for any sort of a comparison to be made. 9 million for Giordano when those guys are getting 12? Doesn't seem so bad any longer. I think he will end up signing a tad below 9 million, but it all depends on the term.

Best guess the Flames Gio and Winters agree to 5 years 7.5 m per.

Agreed. Exactly the contract I predict. It's probably a little much considering his age through the contract, but we've got him at a bargain right now. Gotta pay the best player on the team.

Same here, I could have seen Rich Winter making a strong case for $10M, settling on the upper side of $8-9M (which is where I think he ends up; forgot this is for when he's 33 and not next year though) - for next year, and maybe the year after, I think he is definitely a $9M player as he matches those comps.
Not so sure about when he's 36 though...

I don't know why this is a surprise or an ouch. We know it's a highball to start negotiations.
Also, PK gets 9 and besides age considerations, most posters on here argue Gio is a better overall defenseman. So how is 9 high?
If we get Gio for 8, it's a good deal. Guy peaked at an older age, we got him at a discount last time. He deserves everything he can get now.
