Uhh what?
This entire city is abuzz about Gaudreau. He's pretty much the only player casual fans can name besides Gio. Every time he touches the puck the Dome gets loud.
The puck went in off of him on a strange play by him so he is getting some flack. He's not some sort of God who is excused from all judgement. On top of that, everyone seems to be saying "Johnny had a great game besides..."
I don't think there is a fanbase more obessed with their star rookie then us. The "point production:fandom" ratio is nuts with Calgary and Johnny. Just ask any other fan base how annoying we are when talking about him.

A. The other players pass to Johnny a lot, but as it happens, he is not in scoring position and wide open as much as you think. He's more often in position to accept a pass and set someone else up. He's behind the next, near the half wall or sometimes up near the point as a swing guy. "They don't want him to score" is a fact. Wow.
B. Pretty much every single poster that said Gaudreau was not in position on the last goal also said he had a good game. Which he was. If that was Stajan or Raymond or Glencross, you'd have seen a helluva lot more whining.
C. Speaking of which, yes, other players make mistakes or bad plays too, and it gets noted in GT and PGT all the time. Notice any criticism of Hiller on the second goal? Of either Raymond or Jooris on the first, depending on who they thought should have covered? Not one player on this team has escaped criticism like that, from Gio on down.

Now that is a fact.

Johnny seconds prior made what could have been a GW pass to Hudler. The Min D made a better play getting his stick down on Hudler's deke.
On the OT goall Johnny was 2ft off where he should have been.
He thought he could prevent the player down low from creeping out front.
He was too close to Hiller and the shot got banked off of him.
That is minor a rookie mistake.
What is more concerning is that Johnny is getting knocked around more frequently and his linemates are not standing up to the opposition physically. And no i don't mean scrapping.

Yup, every single player has faced some unproportional criticism at some point.
Monahan early this season before he got over the flu and back on track, Gio when he had a few games in a row with bad pinches leading to goals against (Vancouver OT loss), Brodie when he tries to be too cute, and now Gaudreau when he's having a minor step back in his game (yet still putting up the points).
Heck, even Bouma was under a lot of criticism for a stretch for not actually helping the team defensively at one point!

I agree with almost all of that, which I interpret as not disagreeing with posters who said JG was out of position - you are right about where he should have been.
I agree he's been played a bit tougher by the opposition, and gets squished into the boards a bit more. The problem is, it's pretty minor contact, not even knocking him down usually, and definitely not dirty IMO. If his teammates take issue, they are essentially saying he can't take minor contact and needs them to babysit him. If he ever gets a borderline late hit, or someone messes with him in a scrum, you watch what they do.

Lol, are you kidding me? I think Johnny gets the biggest free pass on this forum. Love the kid, but last night's OT goal was for sure partly his fault for being out of position. But that's ok, he's still learning so I chalk it up to growing pains.

When he put the puck in after the whistle and caused a scrum everyone jumped in to protect him.
Made Johnny look like a bit of a bitch but he can't go toe to toe with those guys so I was impressed with how fast his team mates jumped to defend him.

The only person who looked like a bit of bitch on that play was the referee.

I think it is easy to get overly critical of Johny simply because you see his raw talent in other areas of the game and expect that all around.
I sometimes watch and feel another game in the press box would help him and then he creates a unreal scoring chance.
When he rushes the puck, the puck is either turned over as he isnt big/strong enough to be hit and muscle the puck back OR he is going to make a magical play which often leads to a scoring chance.
When he is on the back check he is either going to strip a player and turn it up ice for a scoring chance or he will end up caught in our own zone and is not overly effective due to his size.
In the offensive zone he will either be rubbed off the puck and it will turn up ice or he can dance around for 30 seconds until everyone is set in position and we generate a scoring chance.
At the end of the day, all of the pros outweigh the cons by a long shot so anytime you think he needs to sit or is having a poor game (myself included), just remind yourself that there is no other player on the team with the ability to hit a switch and create a grade A scoring chance.

Being at the game, some things me and my buddy noticed as we watched:
-Dubnyk was primed to get blown up tonight for those two first periods. His rebound control was quite awful, everything near him bounced off of him in a decent spot, just no one happened to be in that spot to capitalize
-The Jooris line definitely struggled out there tonight. None of them could get anything going really. Its interesting that most thought Jooris was the worst on the line, it seemed to me it was Glencross (not that any were good by any stretch of the imagation)
-Watching Hiller live scares the crap out of me sometimes, he seems to react so late to shots sometimes, but makes the save and lots of times puts the rebound in a good spot.
-I might get me a Lance Bouma jersey, the guy was awesome last night. He had the place buzzing like Johnny usually does in that third period.
-Speaking of Johnny, I dunno, something seems off, maybe too much expectation from myself but it seemed when he tried to do anything he was just not connecting. I can definitely see the argument he has hit a wall.
-I thought most of the defense had a pretty good game despite the bad 1st by the whole team

Oh god, the hyperbole.
Absolutely, the Flames would be in great shape if they start to show better in the first period. But it is ridiculous to point to this flaw in their game as their certain undoing. If this continues, will it make qualifying for the playoffs much more difficult? You bet. Impossible? No. Improbable? I'm not even sure. I've honestly given up trying to figure out what this team can and cannot, or will and will not do.

I will also agree he has cooled off a fair bit. But back to Addy? Hardly. I might say switch him with Colborne on that line at best.

I wonder how much the injury to his wrist is still hampering his game. They were using a tremendous amount of tape on it in the Boston game.
