Now that you put it that way, the "generator" people are indeed terrorising my peace and thus are terrorists.

Now now, we were just teasing each other (I think) - but in that person's defense I'm guessing it's just because on a message board it's not obvious what sex someone is. You could be a dude or a chick, or you could also swing either way.

I don't think it was a you sound mean thus I'm going to call you a derogatory slur.

I use a generator when camping. Mostly so I can use my power tools and do crafts while camping. I like to also run a huge stereo playing generator noises with my generator.

In reality I use my generator on average about 1 hour a day to top off the battery bank in my trailer. I bought a honda which makes so little noise it can't be heard when walking by my site. On my last trip I heard several generators running and I was able to live through the weekend without falling into a ball covered in tears and rather enjoyed myself. I imagine it was easier to have a good time because I realize that the world doesn't revolve around me.

So how do you guys typically go about getting a site within a reasonable drive of the city? Reserve weeks/months in advanced? Drive out on Thursday?

The wife and are in a tent, so walk in sites are viable option for us, and in the past we've managed to snag a site leaving the city after work on Friday. But looking at reserve.albertaparks.ca kinda has me freaked out that our provinces campgrounds are turning into Chinook Centre on a Saturday busy.

Majority of first come first serves are full Thursday on regular weekends and Wednesday on long weekends.

I echo your question as I have been heading to rather run down sites just to get spots.

In the elbow valley (highway 66) the walk in sites at the campgrounds are available until about 3 or 4 on Friday. So leaving at noon should get you something. The other option is Banff. Their minor campgrounds always have room. If you already have a park pass the cost is simiar to the provincial parks.

Why let the sun weakly charge your batteries quietly and unobtrusively when you can have the power of 150cc of raw internal combustion power doing the job for you?

Well, it's a back up for when my generator runs out of gas because I like to run it all day.

Depends where you go I guess. A group of friends and my wife and I have been tent camping for the last two years together. We usually leave town Friday around noon and do just fine.

We have a great spot we frequent often, I'd recommend it to you, but then you'd be competition, and I'd have to destroy you.

We found this campground in 2009... It's rarely booked full and I'm debating putting the location in my will. DEBATING.

Agreed, you can see the generator vibrations on the lake (those arn't natural waves).

Real mean tent camp with generators. How else are you supposed to run the Margaritaville, amirite?

I have been camping in the bush for a few decades now. Started out in a tent, then a small trailer, and then the big fifth wheel. When I was a tenter I hated the generator group. Now I am a proud Gen running MoFo. How else can I make my microwave popcorn and run my TV/DVD combo.

So I realize this is last minute, but would anyone have any recommendations for camp sites that could potentially be available over August long weekend? wasn't originally planning on going, but the schedule has now changed, and I'm able to fit in a weekend of camping (hoping to at least).

The Alberta Parks reservation site doesn't have anything available, so I'd have to rely on a 'first come first serve' site, or maybe one that isn't listed on the Alberta Parks. Anyone have any good suggestions for places within an hour or two of Calgary?

So we're heading to Montana pretty soon to spend a few days camping at Fish Creek in Glacier National Park.

I'm wondering if anyone here has experience crossing the US/Canada border with a car full of camping gear? Aside from the food (we're planning to buy groceries in Whitefish) is there any other "no-nos" we should be aware of?

Camping fuel, bug spray? Anything you'd find in your typical gear that might cause issues?
