A good goalie can carry a bad team. The problem is, he just can't carry them for very long or very far. See also: The 2013-14 Toronto Maple Leafs.
My expectations are that Scrivens, riding a wave of confidence from his time in LA, will come in and do well. Edmonton will have their saviour, he'll get that big money extension. But like happened in Toronto, reality is going to set in. Scrivens will slowly stop bailing his inept defence out as often, and the goals against will creep back up until eventually, Scrivens himself becomes so demoralized that he becomes Dubnyk 2.0. Still an upgrade, but much in the way Windows 8.1 is an upgrade on 8.0: The improvements are so trivial that you half wonder why they bothered.

Then there's Bryz, who is essentially Windows 8 RT. You get your basic service but its extremely limited, not the best option and you wish you could have more.

You do know that Ramo is getting 2.75M from the Flames next year. Scrivens keeps anywhere close to his .931 he should be worth basically twice of what Ramo is getting.

Considering that in his last 5 games Scrivens was under .905 on the very best defensive team in the NHL, what are the odds he will hover around .931 with any significant playing time on one of , if not ,the worst defensive teams in the NHL?

So you're saying he will be looking at about 1.5, ballpark?

Worst case, Scrivens is a flop and not re-signed. Hendricks brings nothing at 1.85 million and is either buried in the minors or bought out this summer. Essentially the worst-case scenario is Edmonton forfeited at high 3rd-rounder and a goalie who was likely gone anyways.
Best case, Scrivens provides some stability in net and re-signs. Hendricks provides functional toughness and shootout prowess. All for the price of a 3rd and an under-performing UFA goalie.
The actual results should be somewhere in between, which (in my opinion) should make this deal a wash at worst. As much as I love to make fun of the Oilers, I think they did pretty well here. Low risk high reward.
EDIT: Hendricks' contract was signed after the new CBA came out, so he isn't eligible for compliance buy-out (not 100% of these rules, though). Could still bury him if needed.
|
You cannot bury a contract in the minors under the new CBA, the 1.85 million for a one-way contract would still count against the NHL cap.
This article basically sums up my opinion of the trade http://www.tsn.ca/fantasy_news/story/?id=441293
The Oilers traded for a 1.85 million 4th line forward who cannot score but can fight, basically a Westgarth with a shootout touch, except signed long term.
They gave up a goalie that had the 12th best save percentage in the league over the previous three years before this one (on a terrible team) for a maybe who might be better.

The Oilers would get some salary cap savings if they place him in the AHL. In the new CBA this savings is calculated as league minimum plus $375,000. Everything above that counts towards the cap.

His wife is from LA. She has already tweeted how happy she was to be done with Toronto and to be back in LA.
There is a VERY strong possibility that she will not want to move to Edmonton.
If you are married, you would understand that a strong opinion from the wife on the matter is a difficult thing to ignore when it came time to making a decision on whether or not to re-sign.

Not in full, no. The team receives a 'discount' of 0.925 million (minimum salary + 375K, so this number rises slightly in '15-16). So worst case, the Oilers are stuck with slightly under a million dollar cap hit for a guy in the minors. Best case, he positively contributes to their bottom six.
I never said these trades were great for Edmonton, just that they're not the horrible mistakes most of CP is making them out to be.
EDIT: I see I am a little slow...

Haha! I wish the Oilers the best of luck with their Gagner+Petry for Crosby+Kunitz trade to go along with signing Hiller for 7 years and max salary.

Saying Hendricks is another Westgarth isn't accurate at all.
Hendricks has put up a 25 point season and played 300 games.
Westgarth hasn't hit 25 points in his career, and played less than 150 games.
At this point of their careers, a better analogy for Hendricks' style of play is Nystrom, albeit Nystrom has played more games. I don't mind Hendricks at all. In fact I wouldn't mind him on Calgary at all. The issue with Hendricks is the length of the contract and the general fact that guys who play a tough game generally break apart in their early 30s.

I think a good comparison for Hendricks is Begin, though he is a bit younger and more useful than Begin was when he was here

Can anyone tell me where that was? (can't seem to find it)
thanks

tsn has a trade tracker:
http://www.tsn.ca/tradecentre/feature/?id=11986
it shows 15 trades since Oct 1st.
Oilers involved in 5 of them:
-Mike Brown for a 4th
-Smid/Roy for Brossoit/Horak
-Omark for a 6th
-Dubnyk for Hendricks
-3rd for Scrivens
Calgary involved in 4 (5 if you include Colborne on Sept 29th)

So with your logic LA should swap Quick for Ramo and pay for most of Quick's contract as playing on the best defensive team in the league he has a save % of .914.
Where would Scrivens rank if he were in the Flames organization?

Yes for sure, good analogy.
Scrivens is every bit as proven as Quick as a top end #1 goaltender, Cup and Conn Smythe winner.

Westgarth was a bad example, I was thinking good ole Tim Jackman and said Westgarth for some reason.
Tim Jackman http://www.hockeydb.com/ihdb/stats/p....php?pid=54834
Matt Hendricks http://www.hockeydb.com/ihdb/stats/p....php?pid=51253
Same age, same stats, same ability. Same dropoff after a great 2010/11, same pretty good 09/10. I think if Burke grabbed Jackman at 1.85 million for three years Flames fans would be pretty upset.
Hendricks is an awful pickup.
