Horak and Bouma would be considered "rookies" in this scenario I think. While they've played parts of seasons, neither has had a full time shot.
Edit:And Brodie. Not a rookie but the dudes only 23.

Oh come on! We're complaining that Galliardi, who's a proven 25 year old NHLer is making the team over 23 year old Corban "Done nothing to merit a full time roster spot" Knight? Or Michael "Will never be more than a 4th liner on a good team" Ferland?
Relax guys. Rookies aren't ever just handed spots right out of training camp unless A) they're miles ahead of everyone else at camp (see Crosby) or their team doesn't know what they're doing (see Oilers).

Happy to see that the Flames are not rushing players into the NHL, or forcing FUTURE tradeable assets to sit and reduce their worth.
Injuries are going to happen. I expect a LOT of call-ups this season. Reinhart and Knight will probably get 20 games in - maybe even 50 or 60, who knows? Let them go back down and build up some additional strength and get seasoned a bit more. Why the rush?
Do people think that they are not developing in the AHL? AHL is really a developmental league, is it not? I don't mind Reinhart going down there and getting a bit faster, stronger and being placed in situations where he can develop offensively better. Same goes for Knight.
As for the Vets on the team - let them play. Teams will come calling for injury replacements and trade-deadline deals to increase their depth. Let them increase their value. This only helps the Flames later on. It also helps having vets to shoulder the load.
Teams like the Oilers who rocketed up to 1st or 2nd in the NHL in the first month of the season and then who quickly came back down to Earth are a great example of youthful exuberance - most of these kids just don't know what the NHL grind is all about, and vets are there to help shoulder that burden and help them develop positively.
Some of you do in fact want a LOT of rookies to make the team. Why? Tired of watching the old vets? Half the people complaining about these vets not putting in the effort will also be complaining half-way through the season when young players are doing the same and the losses (and blowouts) start mounting. That is no way to develop players. It would also make the Flames the laughing stock of the league and would incite fingers pointing at this organization as other fans yell "Dirty tankers!". It is an embarrassment.
I like that the Calgary Flames is a difficult club to make. Flames should never care about draft position, age or contract status (except when dealing with waiver-wire eligible, as it would just be horrible asset management to lose decent players for nothing). If a player wants to be on this team, then that player has to work for it and earn it. If he stops, demote him and bring someone else.
The culture needs to change on the Flames. It has been stagnant for a long time. Replacing the entire roster on the team with 18 and 20 year-olds is NOT going to fix it. Holding them accountable each and every night and ensuring there is competition for their spots will be the best way to hold players accountable, and putting in a solid effort every game.
If Baertschi feels there is really nothing he can do to show he deserves to be on the team, or if that is all blown out of proportion and misinterpreted - doesn't matter. He will make the team if he performs well, he will stay on the team if he keeps performing well - just like every other player.
I am a fan, and you don't need to sell me on the youth movement like you do with Ashax apparently. Sell me on hard work and accountability. Show me that you are doing whatever it takes to improve the Flames for tomorrow, even if it means you POSSIBLY may end up over-seasoning guys on the farm to increase the trade-value of some vets on the team in order to trade for better value later in the season to further the rebuild. Also, don't embarrass me as a fan by icing a tanking team. This season (and the next few most likely) are going to be tough, and I can even accept coming in last. Do it on purpose, and it becomes something else.
Just my rant. Positive moves from the Flames in my opinion, and I am really big on Reinhart. NOTHING wrong with sending them down and playing more minutes in bigger roles in a development league (and one that is touted as the 2nd best in the world), especially when you just KNOW that they will end up playing 'x' amount of games through roster turnover (trades, injuries, demotions/promotions).

I agree, his work ethic was applauded consistently since he has been drafted. While things might have changed, I think it far more likely that he has tried to do "too much", rather than turned into a self-entitled brat. I generally like Hartley as a coach, but this is one coaching challenge that he needs to take on: challenge Sven to be the best, but not overwhelm him with the pressure of carrying the team.

I think this is the most likely outcome.
Baertschi, Horak, Monahan & Bouma are the players I'd most like to watch this season. Funny that they're all 'on the bubble'...

That changes things regarding Joey MacDonald.
No real reason to keep him up now unless he actually outplays the other 2.

Yup...Feaster just confirmed this as well...but MacDonald does.
Also mentioned Breen will start the season in Calgary as a non-roster player due to injury.

He also said they are going to carry 14 F, 7 D, and 2 G.
They are currently at 16 forwards. Hudler has been cleared to play, Cammalleri has not (but they still expect him to be ready for game 1).
I think Street and Jones are the bubble boys, unless they decide they want Jones' size for the fourth line centre, then it's probably Horak (who gets the first recall).
If Cammalleri is cleared, I see the opening night forwards looking like this:
Glencross - Stajan - Stempniak
Cammalleri - Monahan - Hudler
Baertschi - Backlund - Jones
Bouma - Galiardi - Jackman
Horak, McGrattan
If Cammalleri isn't cleared, move Galiardi to Monahan's wing, and Horak to fourth line centre, and keep Jones in Calgary.

The rest of what Feaster said was,,
Still havent decided about the G situation
Baertschi seems to be putting way to much pressure ion himself and has had an up and down TC
Monahan has been an epiphony to all involved. Asks all teh right questions and often asks coaches to show him on video where he should have been on a particuoar play/shift...extremely mature. (reading between the lines, he is staying and i suspect for the season)
Reinhart was told to go to Abby and work on his defensive zone play.
ferland impressed all of them with his weight loss and desire to be better. Was told to work on staying consistent (hit a plateau during camp apparently) and all those sent down were told to "respect" the AHL and its level of hockey.
Knight was told he just needs to work on his game being consistent in all 3 zones and that when he comes back up, it will be to start his NHL career and not for a cup of coffee.
Thats about it right now that i recall but im sure it will be on podcast at some point soon.

Just as a bit of an aside - I really hate how Feaster compared Ferland to Vancouver's Kassian.
I hope Ferland becomes the next Lucic or Simon, not the next Kassian who only remotely shows himself to be an NHL'er and who has low hockey IQ. At least compare him to someone like Prust. Those are the comparisons that fit more (imo) and what Ferland should be aspiring to, not someone like Kassian.

He said the cuts today were tough decisions. He told Knight that he liked what he did in camp and to work hard in Abbotsford so that when he gets recalled, it will be to start his permanent NHL career. He told Reinhart they want him to work on the defensive side of his game, but liked the work he put in over the summer. He told Ferland how impressed everyone was with the dedication he showed during the summer, dropping 15 pounds since the Memorial Cup, and he just needs to keep working in Abbotsford.
They kept Kanzig around so long so that he got the full NHL training camp experience and to see how hard the pros work every day. Now he knows he needs to work hard and be a leader in Victoria so that next year he's pushing to make the Flames. He said that Lowry has been calling him every day asking when they were going to get Kanzig back, and Feaster told him to have patience because he was going to be getting back a much better player than the one he had last year. They are very excited about the player Kanzig can be.
He talked about Hartley's infamous "mountain climber" drill, and that you need to be able to complete them in 45 seconds to be skating at an NHL level. He said that Reinhart worked really hard in the summer to be able to meet that goal. He also said that Kanzig was far off the time and needs to work on that.
Overall, he said that camp this year was much better than expected and much more competitive. The young kids pushed the veterans to be better. The vets worked hard to keep up and there wasn't any whining or slacking.
