I'm pretty confident Baertschi is in the Flames top 9, even if his camp hasn't been what he'd wanted or the coaching staff hoped for. He's going to have to deal with some professional adversity over the course of his career - this team will be a good place to learn that, even though it might be hard and slow going.

The comment that most surprised me is Baertschi felt he shouldn't have had to attend or play in the prospects tourny, .... hmmmm ..... he might be a victim of his own ego if the that statement is true.

Yeah, while I agree that it wasn't necessary for him to be there, he could probably take a lesson from Backlund about humility.

This team treads closer to unwatchable without young players like Baertschi in the line up.
Ridiculous in the Flames current state to not have him there opening day.

It's pretty funny that, when Baertschi first came here, he was applauded for his work ethic and drive, and now, 2.5 years later, posters like CSW claim it to be his biggest issue.

Stressed.
He wants to be as good as fans want him to be.
If I was the coach, I would take a different approach than Hartley has: I would give him lots of ice-time and PP time to see if he can going.
|
I think the coaching staff & management realise this, but acknowledge it will be difficult to give him the opportunities he needs once Cammalleri, Hudler, Stemniak, Glenncross, D. Jones & Galiardi are all on the roster.
The only reason why a demotion is being talked about is because they know Sven would get loads of icetime & PP down in Abbotsford (however his confidence would take a major knock).

From work ethic being his biggest selling point to now his biggest deterrent?
I don't believe it. CSW admitted that he hasn't even watched a single pre-season game, yet he's stirring the pot here.

Top 9, in no particualar order...
Hudler, Cammalleri, Glencross, Backlund, David Jones, Stajan, Stempiniak, Sean Monahan, TJ Galiardi.
For Baertschi to be in the top 9 he has to displace Sean Monahan or TJ Galiardi.
I would guess the 4th liners are Bouma, (Horak or Street.. one of these guys will be cut IMO) & McGratton / Jackman.

When he plays with less talented players, I notice he makes some nice passes but then the play dies on his teammates stick. Some of those would be assists if he played with better linemates in the preseason and then we wouldn't even be having this conversation.

Bouma, Monahan, Galiardi, D. Jones, likely one of Street/B Jones, Kris Russell, SHane O Brien, Ramo, and very possibly Sieloff.
Thats at least 8 new faces....more than 33% of the roster.
What did you want exactly? An entire team of 18 year olds? You want to see that, its available. Its called major junior and Calgary has a team in it.

Wow I think we all know Stryker Steve is just acting like a passionate fan; I think if this was just a normal conversation 1 to 1 he would whole heartily agree with with most people are saying. He just wants to be sure we are not abandoning our commitment to rebuild and of course theres a little disappointment seeing our young guys being sent down. Personally I am pretty excited about the idea that our roster is going to be filled with more and more young guys. At some point maybe we go the Chicago route and pick up a couple skilled players of Marian Hossa ilk, "once the time is right for us to take on the Stanly cup!"
It will be awhile yet but I am hoping we get this rebuild right!

He displaces Galliardi IMO, no question.

He is the most replaceable when compared to our other veterans.

Well he sure as hell isnt old either.
Good lord, and once again, did you want an entire team of 18 year olds? If so, that league already exists and plays out of the same building as the Flames.
I dont understand how some of you cant grasp that some vets (and some that will be around longer than the trade deadline) are an absolute must to help the younger guys on the team become pro's.
As of today, there is a pretty nice blend of youth, middle aged guys and a couple vets on this club.

More than anything, I think it is the tone of coverage that he is getting from the media. I very much doubt that George Johnson approached him and asked a neutral question like, "what did you think of your pre-season?" In fact, from the article it seems like he approached him like, "Are you worried about being sent down after a poor pre-season? Is the pressure from fans getting to you? Has this camp been a struggle for you?"
I think a lot of people are either setting expectations too high and thinking that his failing to meet them is the same as being outplayed by lesser players.

I think they are trying to iron the "kid" out of Baertschi. If he can see it the right way he just needs to take the bull by the horns and understand "he is part of the team". But they need him the leader he can be the players collectively can take things to an even higher level!

I don't want an entire team of rookies. That's not what I'm saying at all.
But right now, only 2 rookies have a chance to make the team: Monahan and Baertschi. Neither are a lock either (though I'd say it's at least a 95% chance that Monahan gets his 9 games).
This is not acceptable. Hell, even Vancouver could start the season with more rookies than the Flames.
I have no problem punishing rookies, making them learn. But at some point we have to put them in situations that we may not be comfortable putting them in. That's what a rebuild entails - like it or not, we're going to be bad.
If we demote every young player who slumps, we'll be in this rebuild forever. Too good to get a top 3 pick, too bad to push for the playoffs.
I'm not asking to be like the Oilers (they had awful veteran talent and leadership), but right now we're pushing the opposite spectrum.

Remember when the Flames were mocked for doing this with veterans?
Not ideal, but it's better than doing that.
