That's why it is usually a bad idea to take a D-man with a top pick. Usually they're so good because of their size against smaller competition, but a lot of the time they don't have the secondary skills to fully develop into the upper tier D-man that they are projected to be.

Yeah, Seth Jones looks decidedly average. I think it would be prudent for the first five teams to pass on him.

He's still going first because Colorado built a tank around the Denver boy, but I've seen nothing to put him over MacKinnon in my books.

MacKinnon was better in the Halifax/Portland game than Jones was.

Colorado and Jones are a perfect marriage, let them have him and let the other teams fight over the rest of the awesomeness that is the top 7.

Jones had a great world junior tourney. If he isn't showing the best right now, he'll still be rated on his full season, and it won't effect his position that much.

While its nice to see top prospects compete against eachother on a big stage I don't think it impacts the scouting process that much...to small of a sample (just like the wjc). Interview process a the combine are really what will set teams list from this point.

Button said as much on the fan 960 last week. Scouts were pretty much done and would have filed their rankings before the tourney, obviously there would be a few scouts at the mem cup but it would really have no effect on their rankings. Same with the combine, the physical testing won't mean much for most but the interviews are huge during that week.

He does play a similar game to Jay Bouw. However his slapshot is considerably better and thus you'll expect him to be much more of a threat from the point on the powerplay than Bouwmeester is. But yes, Jones is a 2-way, puck rushing defenseman with tremendous reach and great skating. He's not a big hitter at all and doesn't physically impose on others. Disagree with those who say he dominates due to his size, that isn't the case at all. His game is based around skating, puckhandling, reach, passing and shooting and not around his being bigger or stronger than others.
All that said it was clear that many around here underrated Bouwmeester because of his salary, his weak point shot and his lack of physical play. He was a very effective defenseman here. But the same people that didn't like Bouwmeester would probably be critical of Jones for similar reasons.
If the Flames were picking #1 I'd rather have MacKinnon that's for sure and I'd be tempted to take Barkov over him as well. Despite the rarity of right handed #1 defensemen I'd go with the potential franchise centre.
My top 4:
1. MacKinnon
2. Barkov
3. Jones
4. Drouin
I think the top 4 or so guys are so close that you really can draft by position or any other particular criteria you want to emphasize. I just love MacKinnon's speed, competitiveness, skill, tenacity, etc.

Rattie has had a pretty consistent playoffs and Memorial Cup. And without Baertschi too. Always nice to be able to cheer for a local boy.

He doesn't dominate due to his size by being physical.
However, his size and strength is a huge advantage for him. He often has one hand on the stick while defending and he still has the strength to be effective. This adds to his reach.
He also intimidates with his size (despite the lack of physicality). Smaller, weaker junior players have a hard time getting around him or beating him in puck battles.
There is no question in my mind that his size gives him tremendous leverage in all aspects of the game. And those advantages will be no where near as evident in the NHL.
I think Bouwmeester is actually a pretty good comparison for him - Bouwmeester in this early years when he was more of an offensive threat. And as you say, with a better shot.

So what did other people think of the discussion on 960 this morning where Walker was pushing the idea of the Flames either dropping from 6 or moving up from 19(ish) to get Domi?
I haven't seen all the cup games at this point, but Domi has looked OK. He made a nice play for the goal last night and a big hit the other night. I wouldn't be a fan of dropping down from 6 for him, but depending on the upgrade could see moving up from 19? I Don wonder how much higher he goes though. Might not have to move up at all.
