Had an idea!

Also, it goes without saying that Apple is going to probably take a lot of marketshare away from not only Samsung with the release of the iPhone 5, but even MORE from Nokia and RIM who are in continual free fall. I would guess by the end of 2012, Samsung and Apple will easily account for 60-70% of all smartphones shipped.

I believe you have to root the phone, that does not seem like a easy task for the average user

Airport express can remote your printer, which doesn't seem to be something you need - me neither I also use AirPrint. It can extend your wireless network if it's all Apple, which yours isn't - mine neither so I only use the express for music streaming. I have three stereos so three AEs. Turns out AppleTV works perfectly well just streaming audio so I was able to retire my oldest AE.
I wasn't able to figure out any integration between Apple and xBox or my cable so I have all three on my main media setup. (I did manage to control my Mac from my Wii controller (pointless).) in practice we use xBox only for games, cable box only for TV and Apple TV for all streaming (iTunes & Netflix)

Not exactly the single digit differences you're talking about.

I think those numbers are market share by shipments for last quarter, not global market share on smartphones - which makes sense, since it clearly illustrates the recent surge in S3 vs 4S sales you mentioned earlier, as Apple sales sag in advance of the launch of the iPhone 5.
I was looking at this chart (the second chart for smartphones):

Does the Apple TV airplay streaming work without having it connected to a TV, just to a stereo? As I write this I am wondering - why wouldn't it?

I have it connected to my AV receiver via HDMI (the only output option?), along with my TV, Xbox and cable. If the TV is off I get audio only.

I just hope those headphones are not real they look just as bad as the current ones. They are painful.

Samsung will be blocked from selling Android phones in North America and they'll be a Windows 8 shop

The only hitch is that the only audio outputs on the Apple TV are HDMI and optical audio so you'd need a receiver capable of one of those. Assuming that, you can use it as an audio only device. Airport Expresses are the way to go for analog output (though they also have optical).

maybe, but the last time we saw Apple without Steve Jobs at the head (1985-1996) it was the darkest time for the company. the only reason they were able to turn things around was because of Steve Jobs bringing over the OS X operating system from his NeXT company. Jobs was the primary driving force behind every single successful Apple product since then, so it'll be very interesting to see if they're able to continue with new innovation or stay status quo and rely on litigation to be their new "innovation"

Not helping with the thread derailing, but I found this interesting. Here are some numbers for the android version adoption over time:
http://developer.android.com/about/d...rds/index.html
(can't seem to imbed the chart but here is a slightly out of date one - the data in the link is more current though)

Well I would say litigation is a result of a lesson they learned from the early 90s. They aren't letting another windows come along, template their idea, and run them out of the market. So on that front I would say they are stronger than in their dark period.
Second, Jobs was run out of Apple the first time, and replaced with someone who was inferior. This time he left with a transition plan, and the chances a person who could continue his vision is much greater.
Third, Jobs still had his fingers in this iPhone, maybe at the road map stage. However, I don't see this being the first phone Jobs would have had no hand in. These Apple products are designed over years, not months.
So overall I would say Apple is not bullet proof, Microsoft is proof of that. However, they do seem to have learned their lesson, and do stand a good shot of making it work for a while longer yet.

Not going to derail this thread, but a simple google search will list them. There is no doubt that the S3 is the best phone available right now. I'm anxious to see what Apple will do to match it.

They tried to litigate against mircrosoft starting in 1988:

They just weren't successful. The recent decision was awarded by jury and will most likely get overturned.

There is absolutely no doubt that the New Jersey Devils are the best hockey team in the NHL right now. I'm not going to tell you why I think this, but I'm sure if you do some searching around Google you will see I am right. It will be interesting to see what the rest of the teams in the league do to match their awesomeness.
