I just looked and it said that 1 USD is worth 99.5 cents Canadian. That just sounds so bizarre.

Strangely enough, exactly 5 years ago today, I took my first ever big trip to the States as an adult. I just checked my records from then and I paid $1.62CDN for every US$ I spent on that trip.
At that time, I never thought I'd see this day.

International markets.
It's 8am in Europe right now and 7am in the UK, so the most recent trading would likely be from Asia.

Where's the best place to track the dollar in real time for all markets? I'd kinda like to be watching when we hit par.

Go to one of these sites: http://www.google.ca/search?q=forex+...ient=firefox-a
Download the free paper trading software and watch it move!! Play around and paper trade too. I am sure there is a better solution, but I like watching the dollar move every second.

After briefly slipping below parity, the C$ is now above parity once more. It currently sits at 1.0002.

you have actually created an area of interest in my head. i am going to check with my guys tomorrow and ask what they see happening with delinking.
at the end of the day, this is about risk. hmmm...this certainly isn't the topic i expected to be discussing on the mighty CP!

Remember though that India or China doesn't have to literally buy OUR barrel of oil. (Oil = any other finite resource)
If India or China (among others) out bids America for a barrel of oil from Saudi Arabia or Qatar, for example, that America WOULD have bought in prior years, America STILL needs a barrel of oil. Thus our barrels of oil have a higher intrinsic value.
America does get a discount if our oil is of lower quality (it usually is) and for being our primary market, but there is still underlying demand (and demand growth) from 'new' oil consumers around the world like never before.
Likewise, most O&G countries in the world (with a few notable exceptions) are actually having their exportable outputs decline year over year (both from increased domestic consumption and maturing reserves). Canada, being ourselves one of those notable exceptions, thus takes on a more and more critical role in picking up the slack. So Canadian dollar growth can be linked not just to energy resource revenue happening today, but to expected growth AND increasing American DEPENDENCE (dependence is a strong thing, far more so than USA discretionary consumer goods demand) in the future.
Claeren.

We should pool our resources and buy an official CP Las Vegas head quarters. We'll write it off as a bussiness expense claiming that it's used to scout the Wranglers.

It's depressed all right. You can pick up stuff at a song right now. I'm trying to convince my sibblings to take advantage of the high Canadian buck, the over-priced Calgary market and the depressed Phoenix market and make a killing. Seriously, you could take the equity that is in the houses in Calgary, buy a home down here, and just wait for the corrections in the currencies and the Phoenix market. Imagine grabbing a house for $250K USD, that 15 months ago was selling for $450K, and getting it at par in CDN dollars? If the markets adjust as projected (after the election), and the Canadian buck drops back to 80-85 cents (as the manufacturing sector desires), and the Phoenix market rebounds the 25% expected in the next year (people are still moving here in droves) you could see a substantial return on your investment. The House value would rebound to ~$315K and the value in CDN dollars would be closer to $360-380K. Lots of speculation, but opportunity knocks for Canucks IMO.

Can a Canadian with no American citizenship just buy a house in the United States, and rent it out? How does this work?

Depends where. Where are you interested or what are your expectations? If you want to be in the burbs, you can get a ton. What size are you looking for and what would the use be? If its a second home, or a vacation home, I'd recommend looking at something that could be a solid rental property. Let me know a few more details and I can fill in more details.
